This is a cute Halloween-themed alphabet book with an original take: the letters are not featured in typical ABC order (although at the bottom of each page, the letters featured are placed in their proper spots until the whole alphabet is filled in). The grade level in which I teach at my school

does a Halloween/Day of the Dead activity day; this would be a great book to acquire and put in my collection library.

This is a delightful book that takes the reader from A to Z on the theme of Halloween. It features animated letters and other Halloween things going on stage to read through the alphabet. There are cute interjections from the creatures and letters in the book, which I can imagine would make many

children giggle and laugh. I would probably not recommend this book for a read aloud because of this, as it would be difficult to get all of the fun interjections in when reading out loud. It would be fun to read with just one or two children though. One thing I noticed that I'm not sure I like is the fact that the author did not go straight from A-Z. It jumps around a bit (G, D, V W, etc...). This could be confusing for children who are new to the alphabet, but it could also emphasize letter recognition in children who already know the alphabet in sequence.

This is an ABC book but it is not quite what you would expect. The letters of the alphabet get all mixed up because A isn’t ready to start. As a result H has to start because H is for Halloween. From then on things get even worse and some of the letters of the alphabet take other letters

costumes! This causes all sorts of problems and everyone is looking for B but can’t find him. Finally he is found “Drum roll, please! B is for-BOO!” but everyone has gone so B is all alone on stage. They all come back to give a final Happy Halloween to all! There is a lot of humor in this book and some of it very young children will not understand. The illustrations are very colorful and go well with the sparse text. I would caution teachers of young students about the subject matter of the book. It talks about ghouls, vampires, zombies, witches etc… While it seems playful, the subject matter might bother some parents so make sure that you read it before you share it with your class.

My son loved looking at the illustrations. There was so much going on and he loved pick out different things.

AlphaOops! H is for Halloween is the story of a performing alphabet that performs out of order. The illustrations are computer generated and the story is an alphabet book with dialogue in text bubbles. I feel that the strength of this book is the vocabulary used. For instance, AlphaOops! H is for

Halloween pairs L with Lycanthrope and U with Undead. Children have the potential to learn so much, so quickly. This book which pairs the letters with archaic and unique items, could be very interesting to gifted children who have already mastered typical alphabet books. It could also be engaging to reluctant readers, who might be brought in by the new angle this book provides.

summary: All the letters of the alphabet are putting on a play for Halloween. They all stand for a different thing that has to do with Halloween. Throughout the play they all say what they stand for but B keeps forgetting. At the end B remembers what he is...BOO!

classroom connection: A great way to

mix up the alphabet so that kids learn the letters and what they stand for without having them to be in order.

Summary: This book presents the alphabet Halloween style.
Review: This book was creative, it used unique words, not a typical Halloween list. The letters became funny characters . The alphabet was told out of order, but kept track of on a ledger on the bottom of each page. This would provide a

great opportunity to have students talk about what the order of the alphabet is. Kids would have a lot of fun with this book

Colorful, exciting, and vibrant, Alpha Oops is a great book to interact with young children. The alphabet is out of order (because behind the scenes with the cast for the play is hectic!) but this book is effective to have kids listen and be observant of what the characters (the letters) are

dressed up as. Overall, this book is a fun and uncommon method of listing the letters of the alphabet! (Also great to read around Halloween)

This book gets an H for Hilarious! The letters are putting on a show and each have their own specific personality. This book cracked me up the whole way through and even ends funny with the letter C trying to pitch a new idea to the director.

The unruly alphabet which appeared in author Alethea Kontis and illustrator Bob Kolar's AlphaOops!: The Day Z Went First return in this second picture book romp, this time celebrating Halloween. Halloween begins with H, who (rather than A) must open the show, followed by the various other letters

of the alphabet who appear on stage, each representing something spooky—V for Vampire, R for Raven, and so on. Eventually B, sulking because P stole his idea—P for Pirate, rather than B for Buccaneer—even gets in on the act, ending the book with a great big BOO!...

I was not aware of the earlier book featuring these letter characters when I found AlphaOops: H Is for Halloween on my public library's Halloween display last week. I simply thought the cover looked fun, with its vibrant color palette and quirky characters, and picked it up on impulse. On the whole, I think it lived up to that impression, with an entertainingly chaotic story, and appealing artwork that accentuated the sense of humor. I'm not sure how effective a tool this would be for starting to learn the alphabet, as all of the letters are out of order, and there's a lot going on visually, but I think it can reinforce letter recognition, in a fun, seasonal way.
