This is a terrific book with awesome illustrations. It is very cleverly written. You can even bake your own Halloween Pie with the recipe provided!

After baking a scrumptious pumpkin pie as a Halloween treat for herself, Old Witch casts a clever spell to protect it, and then sets out into the night to make some mischief. In her absence, the wind blows down her chimney and out her window, wafting the scent of the delicious treat toward the

nearby graveyard, where Vampire, Ghoul, Ghost, Banshee, Zombie and Skeleton find it irresistible. Gobbling down the Old Witch's pie, the six companions seem impervious at first to her protective spell, until...

Although I love pumpkin pie - what would autumn be without it?!? - with a name like Halloween Pie, I think I expected something a little more exotic, when it came to Old Witch's special holiday recipe. I thought that the final storytelling conceit here, in which the six spooky pie-grabbers turn into pie ingredients themselves, before being 'liberated' through the baking process, was an interesting, but not entirely successful development. Somehow, it didn't quite work. Leaving these issues aside, I still enjoyed this holiday tale, both for the writing itself - I liked some of Tunnel's use of repetition, and there was the occasional turn of phrase ("Soon the wind began to blow...") that appealed to me - and for the artwork by Kevin O'Malley. The Old Witch herself, with her vivid green skin and her rather creepy eyes, was particularly well done! All in all, this was an engaging little read, one I would recommend to young readers who are looking for fun Halloween fare.
