“Say Hello” by Rachel Isadora is a fantastic introduction to languages and our multicultural society, appropriate for the ages of about 3 to 6. Thus the story is about a young Spanish girl named Carmelita. Set in America, the story follows Carmelita, her dog (Manny) and her mother one day, as

they walk through a busy city's streets to visit Carmelita's grandmother. On their way, Carmelita and her mother greet people of many different cultures in their relevant language, such as Arabic, French and Italian just to name a few. A significant point about “Say Hello” is the fact that Manny greets every person with a “woof” (Isadora), which I think really emphasizes that it’s important to be friendly and accepting of someone, regardless of their culture. Another noteworthy aspect of this picture book are Isadora’s vibrant illustrations, which are a mixture of oil paints and collage. Every illustration is very colorful and detailed, which suits the multicultural theme. Also the last page of “Say Hello” is useful, as it’s a summary of all the hellos it contains, along with their pronunciations.

looks like painted pieces of paper cut out into shapes to form the people, places, and things. Some of the pieces look like printed paper as well. It was interesting to look at as an older reader but I do remember not enjoying this type of illustrations as a child. Also, in the back of the book features all the different ways to say Hello in the different language. It has the word broken down so that children can learn them. I think that is a fantastic aspect for children book. I would definitely recommend this book for a diversity week.

Nothing really incredibly new here, but cute illustrations; and I loved that one of the multilingual hellos is the dog's "woof" on each page.

Review: I think this book is great to read to introduce children to different languages. The main point of this book was to learn how to say hello in other languages. It also introduced a little about each culture as Carmelita and her mom were saying hi. For example, they said Bonjour in a bakery, which shows that some of our foods are based off of French goods. The clothes worn in the story were also a good example of what could be seen in a different countries. For example, when they went into a Japanese restaurant, the people there were wearing outfits that may be seen as traditional Japanese clothing. Overall, I thought this book would be a great way to open up about a topic on different cultures and I really liked how the author showed how diverse a city can be with everyones different cultures.

Carmelita, the kids can learn to say hello in the different languages, and learn about the different cultural things introduced (such as the Kimono from Japan).

Ages: 3 and up. It might be a little above a 3 year olds level, but they could learn a couple different ways to say hello.
