I am a huge fan of Judy Sierra and Marc Brown, and I liked this one a lot. The rhyming is very good (as always) - he, karaoke, Hokey Pokey; and the illustrations are adorable and vibrant. To me, it sounds a little too close to "Seussical" and there are quite a few books where zoo animals take the

initiative to put on a show, or take over the zoo, etc. So, it's a solid choice for all libraries, but not unique.

Winter weather is giving the zoo animals the doldrums, until they get the idea to share their musical talent with a zoozical! The rhymes are clever and the illustrations amusing. It makes a wonderful read-aloud. And there are plenty of giraffes. I approve. :)

It’s winter and it’s cold and the weather is miserable. Everyone is down in the doldrums. A group of animals at the zoo decide to put on a musical, adding new lyrics and dance numbers to old songs, to cheer everyone up. The musical, a “zoozical”, is a big hit.

This is a fun introduction of what a musical is for young children. It is nice that they use animals to keep the setting fresh. And the fact that there are folk songs used (or snippets of folk songs used) really make your music teacher happy.

This was a cheerful book to read on a rainy day! Colorful pictures and fun rhyming with zoo animals make this a fun one.

On a rainy day, the animals at the zoo get restless. They decide to put on a musical and everyone discovers how talented the animals really are.

I used this book for my author study of Judy Sierra because she is one of my new favorite children's author. The illustrations by Marc Brown are also so

wonderful. I love everything about the littles series of books by Sierra that deal with the animals of the zoo and all their adventures.

ZooZical
“ZooZical” written by Judy Sierra is a fun read about animals who save the zoo. The language is patterned with rhyming words that tell a story that readers will be easily entertained by. “Bears walked the tightrope with elegant ease, Flamingos whizzed by on the flying trapeze, Racoons

dance in pairs, baboons dance in troops, and snakes joined the dancers as live hula hoops”. With words this descriptive, illustrations are needed because the reader can paint a picture in their minds, BUT Marc Brown as beautifully illustrated this book. The pictures fill the pages and are classic Marc Brown style, just as in the “Arthur” books. Each page has animals dancing on the pages and putting on a show that is fun to look at. The book pushes readers to deal with the feeling of defeat, but to not give up. When winter comes and “field trips are few” , the animals feel “humdrum” and “The zoo gates closed early”, but the animals decide to create the “Zoozical” and save the day. This is also the big idea of the story, don’t quit!

ZooZical is a fun read and can be used to inspire the writing of students about a time when they had to solve a problem or a time when they were bored but came up with something fun to do. This book is appropriate for kindergarten through second grade.
