Nice read aloud about table manners.

Can't get enough of those dinosaurs! Next I expect to see How do dinosaurs go through menopause and translated into Urdu. The fun is so infectious, though, the situations so recognizable, and Teague's illustrations so vibrant. No play dinos here! No cuddly, child-sized critters. This is the real

thing, throwing food all over! And now it's in Spanish! Look out, Bi-Lingual Storytime!

It's a silly book and at the first bit is what dinosaurs don't do to eat their food but at the end it tells you what dinosaurs do to eat their food. They eat their food a bit like people do. At the beginning they are naughty and afterwards they are sensible.

How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food is a book illustrating bad table manners by dinosaurs, before saying that no, dinosaurs do not do these things, they actually have very good table manners.
The illustrations are very funny and all children will love this book. Very colorful.

Summary: How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food starts off asking if dinosaurs belch and burp or throw their food. The first half shows the dinosaurs being naughty and rude but goes on the say that NO dinosaurs have great table manners and say please and thank you.

Personal Reaction: This is a great book

to discuss how to eat and have manners. The pictures are very colorful and funny. I enjoyed this book and it made me laugh.

Classroom Ideas: All children need good manners and this would be a great book to read before snack time and have the students practice good manners at the table.

Genre: This story is a fantasy. This story was about how dinosaurs eat at the dinner table and how they are messy (in the end they are not though). This makes a good example for a fantasy because in reality dinosaurs do not exist or even eat at a dinner table. There is however messy eaters in this

world and that is what the story is about.

Age: primary

Media: Pastel

Use: 1. Use as a lead into manners in the lunch room 2. Use in a unit on dinosaurs (this book tells you all the types of dinosaurs)

This was a good short story to me. It talk about the dinosaur in the story was not nice and mannerable at first and really didn't have much table manner. Throughout the story the dinosuar begin to learn table manners. I enjoyed looking at the pictures in the story.

The dos and don’ts of table manners are explained using humorous dinosaur characters. The first half of the book presents what not to do at the dinner table and the second half corrects these bad behaviors. Children will find it hysterical that human parents are fed up with their misbehaving
Show More
dinosaur children. Seeing the dinosaurs use human-sized dinnerware is also quite amusing. The species names of the dinosaurs are presented on the pages with them as well as on the inside covers. This will help dinosaur-loving children learn some new information. The illustrations are composed of muted, cool colors and are drawn using thin lines. While the drawings appear cartoon line, identifying features of the specific dinosaur species are included to further help the reader identify which character is which species. The representations of the dinosaurs are very large in comparison with their surroundings. Each spread contains only one rhyming sentence, which allows the images to truly take center stage. One concern of parents may be, however, that the negative behaviors are portrayed first and in a funny manner. Parents may worry that these behaviors are being reinforced. Luckily, the end of the book corrects the behaviors and shows the parents becoming more and more pleased with the good manners of the dinosaurs. This book is recommended.

This is a unique book that teaches manners. First it gives examples of bad things dinosaurs do while eating, followed by the way a well behaved dinosaur would eat his food. This is a great book to read to elementary students and below to encourage good manners.

I love it, it is a great way to teach manners for girls and boys alike. My daughter loved the dinosaurs and she even was able to name a few without me saying a thing! I'm sure she was also able to relate with some of them because of their manners! Great collection Jane Yolen. I will be back for

I liked this book for several reasons. I liked how it went about teaching manners to kids in different way. It started off showing the dinosaurs doing rude and inappropriate things and then showed them doing the polite and appropriate things in the kitchen. I like how the author chose dinosaurs as
Show More
the characters in the book in order to make it more entertaining. There were so many different dinosaurs from t-rex to raptors. I think it was a cute idea to use dinosaurs to teach kids that even an animal could be polite and say please and thank you and try new foods. I also really enjoyed the illustrations of the different kind of dinosaurs either being rude by bubbling their milk or by waiting patiently for their food. The main message of the book was to teach kids how to be polite in the kitchen whether it is trying new foods or saying please and thank you. I enjoyed how the beginning of the book showed examples of the dinosaurs being rude by fidgeting in their chairs or flipping their food off their plates, but by the end showed the correct way to act such as sitting patiently for their food.

I liked the concept of using dinosaurs instead of people as the characters in the book to teach manners. It was not very informative, but it did have actual names of dinosaurs on the pages under the illustration.

SUMMARY: This book asks the reader how they think dinosaurs eat. It compares it to

children eating, such as "bubbling their milk", or "fussing and fidgeting and squirming in their chair." Then, the story goes to what the dinosaurs are supposed to do, such as sitting quietly, being polite, and trying new things.

The idea of this story is to teach children how they should behave at the dinner table. I liked the book because of the writing and characters. The characters were a variety of dinosaurs and parents. The dinosaurs acted exactly how different kids would act at the table, and how parents would
Show More
respond to what they’re doing. Even though the characters are dinosaurs, the readers are able to relate to them. I liked that the book rhymed all the way through. It creates a simple rhythm that allows the book to flow nicely and for the reader to stay engaged. One section of the story said, “ He tries every new thing, at least one bite. He makes no loud noises that isn’t polite.” I also like how the author organized the book. The book first starts out with impolite things to do at the dinner table such as burping, fidgeting, and throwing food on the floor. Then in the second half of the book the dinosaur demonstrates the polite things to do at a table like saying, “ please or thank you”. The illustrations are all very vivid, allowing the readers to take interest in the things that the dinosaurs are doing. Children may not realize that picking up food with your toes is ridiculous until they see a big dinosaur do it.

The prospect of having a protoceratops come over for dinner or of joining a quetzalcoatlus for a fancy restaurant meal is sure to amuse young readers. Playful dinosaurs populate this clever tale that’s guaranteed to keep young readers laughing at the dinosaurs’ mischievous table manners.
