Lieutenant in Royal Artillery. Prisoner in PG 21 Chieti, he escaped from PG 78 Sulmona after the Armistice. Travelled to Rome in early December 1943 and became a key player in the Organisation run by Major Sam Derry and Monsignor OʼFlaherty that helped ex-POWs sheltering in Rome and the surrounding countryside. Arrested in early January 1944, he spent time in Regina Coeli jail before being transferred to PG 77 Pissignano transit camp, north of Spoleto. Escaped from train near Mantua with Lieutenant J.S. Johnstone RE (who had been in PG 21 with him). Cycled back to Rome where he continued to work for the Organisation until the liberation in June 1944.
