Beyond the Wire: One man's remarkable POW escapes

A rear-gunner (sergeant) in a Wellington with number 70 squadron. Captured in North Africa. PoW at PG 82 Laterina (near Arezzo) and escaped through the wire at the Armistice. Walks south, engages in brief partisan skirmish and then lives in and around Goriano Valli between LʼAquila and Sulmona. Is recaptured but escapes. In June 1944, the Germans having withdrawn, he walks into Sulmona. Describes return visit to Goriano thirty-five years later. Awarded the Military Medal.
