Local notes
Captain, 7th Battalion of the Black Watch (51st Highland Division). Captured in Tunisia in April 1943, shot in hand and spent 4 months in PoW hospital near Bologna. Transferred to PG 47 Modena about 3 weeks before Armistice. Hides in a tunnel when Germans take rest of prisoners to Germany and escapes with Tom Cokayne. Later he travels south with Australian PoW Claude Turner. Take refuge in village of Vivaro Romano, near Arsoli, Lazio. Recaptured and taken to PG 77 Pissignano, end December 1943. Escape but in April 1944 are betrayed and taken to PG 82 Laterina. Taken to Mantua, from which they escape while being deloused. Recaptured and taken to Germany to Oflag IX A/Z at Rotenburg, south of Kassel.
