Story of New Zealander Frank M. Gardner DCM (1916–1972) following jump from train taking him from Foggia to Germany after the Armistice. He found himself near Gemona in Friuli area of the Dolomites north of Udine. Broke his leg in the jump but taken in by Italian family and nursed for four months. Then fights with group of Italians for eight months on 28 operations against the Germans in the area. He accepts the surrender of two German garrisons (600 men), before the Allied advance arrives. Quotes extensively from Gardner himself.
