Peter Winter (1919–2004) was among 2,000 New Zealanders left stranded on Crete with no option but to become prisoners of war. Incarcerated for nearly four years in German and Italian POW camps. Winter never lost his burning desire to regain his freedom and he made a number of escape attempts, both spontaneous and planned. There is one chapter (pp. 100–105) on his experiences in Italy in 1942–43, where he was imprisoned in PG 57 Gruppignano, near Udine.
