In 1942 Lance Corporal Lawrence Bains, then 22 years old, was captured in North Africa and sent to a Prisoner of War camp in central Italy. In 1943 he escaped, and went on the run in the hills and villages of Marche in Italy, hiding from the Italian police and army, and the Germans. Starting with no supplies, no money and knowing no Italian, he lived with the peasant farmers of Marche for nine months before being repatriated as the Allied Forces moved up the Italian peninsula. This is the story of those nine months behind German lines.
