Westheimer (1917–2005) served the United States Army Air Forces as a navigator in a B-24 and was shot down over Italy. He spent time as a PoW in Italy as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III. This novel about an escape from Italy to Switzerland was adapted as a film starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard in 1965.
