What do a hand massage, a dog bark-to-English translating device, a gorgeous shirt, jellyfish, vegan children, antique kitchen timers, and holiday sing-a-longs have in common? They're all present in this hilarious installment of Laurie Notaro's continuing memoirs-in-short story form. There are a
Show More
few tales that never gain the steam needed to stay tuned for the comical payoff at the end, but the majority of them keep the laughs (and in some cases, nausea) coming. My personal favorite? Ambien Laurie. I want to crack up just thinking about it.

The great thing about Notaro's non-fiction is that at the end of every single book, I just want to go get a cup of coffee with her and make fun of all the other people in the coffeeshop. I'm sure I'm not the only fan of her books that feels that way. (And for the record, I also adore her fiction.)

The only reason I've rated the book at 3 stars instead of 4 is that I believe the narrator for the audiobook was poorly chosen. While she excels at the voice of Laurie's mother (which requires an over-the-top performance), most of the other voices were either far too expressive (Laurie) or not expressive enough (Laurie's husband, Jamie). I'll admit that I have a bias toward memoirs read by the author (as opposed to fictional works which I believe should NEVER be read by the author), but Ms. Huber just was not the right choice for this project.

Another fun book from Laurie Notaro! The chapter where she realizes that size M and an L are very different and her dressing room antics had tears running down my face!

And who hasn’t gotten those FWDFWDFWDFWD from your parents or in-laws with every hoax available to man and no matter how many
Show More
times you tell them it’s a hoax they still send them along to you!

Ambien Laurie is freaking hilarious and makes me wonder what this drug is supposed to do because it didn’t seem to help her sleep!

I enjoy Laurie’s sense of humor its sardonic and sarcastic and I can relate to her very well. Laurie’s books are fun and will make you laugh if you like sarcastic humor.

As usual Hilary Huber does a great job at the narration!

I think Laurie Notaro is hilarious. She has a way of taking every day situations and describing them in a way that makes you laugh. She has a way of articulating those things you may have thought or been frustrated by and making you laugh about them.

For example, who hasn't grabbed the wrong size
Show More
and gotten stuck in it in a dressing room? Or received all of those FWD emails from a mother warning of dire circumstances?

Overall a good read and a good laugh!

Similar to her other stuff, funny and sarcastic.

This book is so good that I have recited passages while acting them out to friends and family. I sat at my desk and laughed out loud at Laurie's antics. I wish that she had written a hundred books so I could just continuously read her.

Seriously...this is one of the funniest books that I have ever
Show More
read. I was completely entertained.

The essays cover:

Wrestling with a shirt in a dressing room
Ambien Laurie
Chocolate Stars on her husband's pillow
The state of being of nonlicked children
Vacationing with her nephew

Pick her up! You will be entertained!

I must not have the same sense of humor as the people who gave it 4 stars. If you like books like; Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog: The Amazing Adventures of an Ordinary Woman by Lisa Scottoline or I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman by Nora Ephron ( both of which I
Show More
loved!) I don't think you will enjoy miss Notaro's humor. I only laughed hard while reading 1 chapter and after trying to like this book I had to gave up on chapter 7. It was just not my kind of writing.

It Looked Different on the Model: Epic Tales of Impending Shame and Infamy by Laurie Notaro

★★★★★ ♥

I’ve pretty much read every Laurie Notaro book, and as usual, this one did not disappoint in the least. In fact, I would say that this is one of my favorite by her. She is hilarious. If
Show More
you enjoy Jen Lancaster, this is no way you can’t enjoy Notaro and vise versa.

The situations that Laurie gets herself into are too funny, I found myself laughing on several occasions while reading this book. They are also situations that one can see themselves getting into. For the most part, they aren’t over top, making her very relatable. I would recommend this for anyone looking for some humor. It’s a fun, quick read. I know I had trouble putting it down. I was even disappointed that sleep finally took over at several points (being super sick and on sleepy meds does that) because it meant putting down the book. I look forward to her next book being released this coming week (on 5/7/2013).

Couldn't get into the stories; the humor's a bit too droll for my taste. The author does have a keen observational sense.

Finally figured out to do a 1/2 star!! Yay me!! Overall enjoyed this collection from Notaro, but I found it to be a bit uneven. The belly laughs were there, but interspersed with a little too much, "oh, that's kinda cute." With that said, the belly laughs are worth the price of admission.

Funny stories from the author's life. FWD e-mails from her mother which equates future world destruction. Getting banned from the neighborhood Christmas party due to lip synching Jingle Bells. Having trees stolen from planters in her front yard. A wrestling match with a shirt that is mis-sized in a
Show More
dressing room. And the dog translator collar which tells you what the dog's bark means. Some were just hilarious.

Pretty funny book. I had fun listening to it while I worked. I think people were wondering why I was laughing sometimes.
