Plop the baby barn owl was afraid of the dark. He sets out to learn all about the dark and meets other characters who each tell him a story about why dark isn't frightening. By the end of the book Plop likes the dark.

Delightful illustrations. Timeless. Slightly twee and predictable but enjoyable to read as an adult. Of course, it's not really aimed at grown-ups and this was adored by my 5yo boy, especially when we got to go EEEEK!

Jill Tomlinson (British author) created a sweet novel about a young barn owl who is afraid of the dark. This is a beginning reader novel entwined with rich vocabulary to help boost deep thinking. This makes a great read a loud for first and second graders and can be used with a side study on owls,

nocturnal animals, habitats (there are various species of owls that live in all of the habitats of our world, except Antarctica!). Jill has written a series of early reader novels, but this is my favorite! She also created a shorter picture book version of this book which is perfect for early readers. Show Less

I like the concept of teaching children all sorts of ways to appreciate the dark, but the idea of a baby owl being afraid of the dark is just too silly to swallow. The book as a whole is corny, flavored too much like a saccharine 'instant classic.'
