I don't understand this Cree book, of course, and if they were going to make it bilingual they could have had more than a couple of lines in English, but the Cree is still fun to read and the illustrations are beautiful with the blueberries and birch trees and big red sun. Me and Em have fun with

this one, telling our own stories.

It seems kind of weird to blame a book for the language it's in, but in this case Emmett and I had way more fun reading the Cree version and guessing what it said than reading the story in English. It seems really obvious that a dual-language edition would have been the way to go.

One of my favourite of Flett's work.

This book is quiet, beautiful and so full of spirit. I love little details Flett includes in her illustrations like a purple-mouthed child eating berries, the way the grass looks on the page. I love how muted her colour palette seems but still delivers such a

punch.

This is so poetic and so readable. So easy, and a total treasure.

Hope to include a video on this book on my channel soon.

Translating just a single word from the sentence on each page, this book seems to be primarily for English speakers who want to introduce the Cree language to their children. The words and pictures bring us into the peaceful woods, meeting the birds, ants, spiders as berries are picked, thanked and

eaten. A cultural outlook is thus subtly presented.
Book ends with a recipe for wild blueberry jam! A pronunciation guide for each of the Cree words is listed in the back.
