Local notes

Alternatively titled "The Butler Did It Again" in the Final Crisis collection.

This issue is the second half of a two-parter taking place between Final Crisis #2 and #6, especially during Final Crisis #5. The frame story is set during Batman's captivity at the hands of Mokkari, Simyan and Lump (under the direction of Darkseid), but the majority of the issue is a recounting of Batman's memories of all his major experiences throughout every incarnation of the DCU.

This issue focuses first on how Bruce Wayne's life would have turned out had his parents survived Crime Alley. Once Batman realises this is untrue, memories of his biggest traumas are played through: His breaking at the hands of Bane, the death of Jason Todd, the crippling of Barbara Gordon, the earthquake that destroyed Gotham, using a gun to threaten Deathstroke, the death of Jack Drake and the recent torture at the hands of Doctor Hurt and the Black Glove.
This involves flashbacks to the following issues:
Batman #244 (the first return of Ra's al Ghul from the dead), #251 (the Joker returning to his violent roots), #255 (the origin of Anthony Lupus), #408 (the origin of Jason Todd post-Crisis), #428 (the death of Jason Todd), #442 (Tim Drake first becoming Robin), #497 (Bane breaking Batman in 'Knightfall'), "Cacatclysm" (around #553, the earthquake of Gotham), "No Man's Land" (around #565), #619 (the end of the first encounter with Hush), #656 (the arrival of Damian), #680 (Batman R.I.P.), as well as "The Killing Joke" (the shooting of Barbara Gordon), "Legends of the Dark Knight" #63 (the confronting of Jean-Paul Valley in "KnightsEnd") and "Identity Crisis" #5 (the murder of Jack Drake).
