bildungsroman, but Amory Blaine isn't the only character who comes of age: the bildungsroman itself, as a genre, does. Fitzgerald had clearly read Portrait of the Artist and any number of other examples, but he managed, in his early twenties, to make his own fully achieved version. It's an amazing achievement.
