bildungsroman, but Amory Blaine isn't the only character who comes of age: the bildungsroman itself, as a genre, does. Fitzgerald had clearly read Portrait of the Artist and any number of other examples, but he managed, in his early twenties, to make his own fully achieved version. It's an amazing achievement. F. Scott Fitzgerald's brief all too brief one might say. His "The Beautiful & Damned" was his greatest work which he could not top with his next work, "Tales of the Jazz Age." His work focused acutely on a too brief period of time which few readers can relate to, especially those who have no taste
