From the context, and from everything I've heard about Bernhard, this account of an unhappy, deprived childhood in wartime Austria and Bavaria should be thoroughly depressing, but the quality of the writing and the sheer originality of Bernhard's technique don't leave you with any time to feel sorry for him, or to whinge about trivialities like the absence of paragraph and chapter-breaks.
