The author is a German Roman Catholic priest who has visited Jerusalem several times, twice staying for several months. He mixes Bible verses and his own poetry into his descriptions of the various places he has pilgrimed to.

It is all quite simple and moving. He worships not only with his own

community, but in various synagogues on the Jewish festivals. He visits Bethlehem for the western Christmas, again for the Greek and Syrian holiday, and a third time to celebrate Christmas with the Armenians.

The second half of the book is more theological and political. He then finishes with a series of visits to archeological sites and crusader sites before it is time to leave after one last visit to the Holy Sepulcher.
