Impressive book about European Embroidery from 1250 - 1650. Really wish I could read German rather than just being a good guesser at German. First section is about Production, Market, and Patterns, with much text and a few photos. The Catalog chapters (my translation) are: Gold and Silk Stitchery
Several Or Nue examples - what strikes me most about them is that the faces are done in split stitch, not over gold. Lots of embroidered bands. A sweet Pascal Lamb with short lengths of gold purl for wool. Many good closeups of stitching. Some Or Nue appears to be couched over a base of monochrome silk. Some Opus Anglicanum. Lots of couched gold. Full page of an early 17th c. Italian slashed silk satin textile with English-like borage, carnations, strawberries, pansies, etc. embroidered in silk shading. Chapter on whitework. Chapters are: text in German about a topic, such as Gold and Silk Stitchery, then a series of high-quality photos of extant pieces (1/4 page photos or smaller) with several paragraphs about that piece, including century and location at beginning. The end of the book has a 3 page summary in English. Slick pages, excellent color photographs, footnotes.
