Description

A brilliant and scathing look at the New York literary scene which was a sensational hit when first released and has remained a cult classic ever since. Fresh as ever, the witty and whimsical novella follows poet Lucinella in her adventures among the literati as she travels from Yaddo-like writers' colonies to the grit of the city, where writers are confronted with questions of how husbands, publishers and filing systems can boost their careers and get their lives in order.

1976. I loved this book. It is about a group of writers, mostly poets, who move between Yaddo and New York and circle each other desperate for praise and recognition from each other. They are insecure and arrogant and snarky and empathetic in turns, and they puff themselves up for continual rounds

of dinners and cocktail parties and symposiums on writing. The writing is detailed and precise, poetic, realist, but sometimes mythic or magical too. Lucinella has an affair with the God, Zeus after chatting with his wife Hera about all his affairs previous and what she did to the parties involved. So far I have read two of Segal's books and I am enchanted with her wit, her idiosyncratic details, her empathy, humanity and foibles.

Aims for lightheartedness but is simply too precious.
