The author's purpose for this story is to explain how birthdays are celebrated in seven different countries around the world- Finland, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, The Philippines, and Sweden. For example, one of the traditions in Sweden is for the birthday child to drink hot

chocolate before getting out of bed, in The Netherlands the birthday child stays up later than usual, and in Finland the happy birthday song is sand as guests walk in the door rather than singing at the table before eating cake. I liked that at the end of the book there was birthday superstitions, information about birthday months, and many other interested birthday facts. Show Less
