This is a month by month book, which is nice for teaching month order and seasons. It also has a cute song that goes with it. My one qualm with this story is that in February he gives the snowman the cake and eats soup- I don't care how much he likes it, no kid would give up cake for soup.

Around my vegetarian household it was Tofu soup with rice, but still beloved. We especially loved the Nutshell Library, which contained small copies of this and three other Sendak books.

Another pocket book by Maurice Sendak, offering to the reader a soup for every month, for every mood, even if it is always chicken soup with rice...

This is a cute story about a boy who eats chicken soup in every month and encounters something different each time. There is a snowman, wind, ice elephants, robins, roses, pots, water, a crocodile, witches, a whale and a Christmas tree involved. It is great for showing the different seasons.

I like
Show More
the length of this book (short) because you can teach the months fast and fun. It is a book I own and have since I was little. It is cute to look at all of the illustrations and the character has a vivid imagination.

In a classroom activity time, I would have the students make a themed calendar. In the space for each month's picture, instead of chicken soup, they should draw something they could do all year round. Comprehension of the different seasons and what takes place over time is important. We could also make chicken soup with rice as a meal. It helps children learn measuring and also the value of cooking.

This book is a great example of a fantasy book because there are things like the wind, birds, and pots that are given human characteristics. And none of these things can do the things they do in the book in real life.

This book is a book of poems. For each month of the year, there is a poem about chicken soup with rice. In January, for instance, a little boy talks about how nice it is to slide on ice while sipping chicken soup with rice. The illustrations accompanying each poem are sure to be favorites, as they
Show More
are simple, fun, and interesting. The poems also excite the imagination. In July’s poem, the narrating little boy travels “to the fishy deep/ where chicken soup/ is selling cheap” The illustration shows a turtle wearing a chef’s hat stirring soup!

This book is incredibly cute. I’m a fan of poems that rhyme and this book has 12 themed poems that each have a simple rhyme scheme. When I brought this book home, my fiancé exclaimed, “I remember reading that when I was little”, so this book will surely stay in the hearts of whoever reads or hears it.

For classroom extension ideas, I thought a teacher might read one poem each month. This would allow for the children to appreciate poetry better. Children might understand the inspiration for poems easier if they hear a poem about sliding on ice and eating hot chicken soup with rice if they themselves can experience the actions that are being described. A teacher could also make chicken soup with rice and let the children eat it. Afterwards, as a class, students could write their own poem using any month of the year.

Chicken Soup With Rice is a poem book about chicken soup with rice twelve months out of the year. The boy dreams of riding an elephant to swimming in the sea all the while eating, serving and making chicken soup with rice.

I love rhyming books so this is a good one for me. The silliness of the
Show More
adventures and the love of this food make it fun to read.

We would learn the twelve months of the year then have a cooking lesson and make chicken soup with rice and see if we think it is as wonderful as the author.

An enchanting book of poems about the months of the year. Each one ends with "chicken soup with rice." A great little book for all ages.

A classic picture book of the favored author Maurice Sendak. Lots of good repitition and rhyming including 12 months of the year. It would be great to read this book on the first day of each month, identifying student birthday's and anything else that would go well with chicken soup with rice

during that month.

Children will love to listen and recite Sendak's book poems, Chicken Soup with Rice. No matter which season or country, he's having chicken soup with rice. Brilliant!

“Chicken Soup With Rice,” is a nice poetry book of the months of the year. A good idea would be to have students make a calendar and draw out the different types of seasons.

Lovely rhymning story that goes thru each month of the year. A great kids story that adults will enjoy as well.

Chicken Soup with Rice goes through the different months of the year and always ends with chicken soup with rice being perfect for every season. I love this book!!! It's so silly and cute. I was reading this to my god child and the voice I was using made her crack up so much that it just made me
Show More
love the book even more. It's perfect for teaching seasons and the months of the year.

For some reason I find completely unfathamable, our oldest daughter loved this book when she was four years old. I think it is one of Sendak's weaker efforts, but who am I to argue with its intended audience. At least it helps children learn the months of the year.

This is a fun little book, mixing the months and seasons with chicken soup with rice. While I was a teacher, I remember getting this book and cassette tape from one of the student book clubs, and the tape had the story in song form, sung by Carole King. Rereading this book today, I could still hear

Carole King singing the words. :) Fun illustrations too!

Sendak's text is both amusing and amazing! A year ago Ming Ming could chant out most of the text if I remind her the name of each month.

This was my favorite book for a big chunk of my childhood. Thanks, Mr. Sendak!

This is a cute book of rhymes for each month of year regarding consuming chicken soup with rice.

An early Sendak, published in 1962, it is whimsical, lyrical and joyous. There is nothing of depth, it is simply a book of lovely illustrations that make the reader smile and harken back to happy days.

Chicken Soup with Rice is a classic, and it deserves that title. The main idea of the book is the passing of the seasons. This is shown through the poems being named after the months, and through the illustrations. The illustration, as well as the form are the greatest things about this book. Each
Show More
small poem has a rhyme structure that is rhythmic and easy to follow, and accurately portrays a child's activity in each month for which the poem is named. The illustrations are drawn like that a child could come up with to match the tone of the text, and add more to the passages with details that could not fit into the poems.

The main idea of the book is the way the season change with time. It is a serious of poems, each named after a different month. Each small poem has a simple rhyme structure that depicts the child's activity for that month.

This book is great for young children, from Pre-K through First grade. It
Show More
helps children learns the months of the year and depicts activities that would be fun for each student to do during a specific month. The illustrations are great because they look like something a child drew. I really think students would enjoy this book as it is extremely interactive.

Another one of my favorite books as a child. I have always been a big fan of Maurice Sendak; he has lovely and imaginative stories combined with sweet and funny illustrations. This particular book doesn't necessarily have any character development. It is more about learning the different months and
Show More
what happens in each month, though of course eating chicken soup with rice is the constant activity. This is a fun book for young children to learn the months, especially if combined with Carole King's song version, which I grew up with.

Chicken Soup with Rice is a poem book written about different months of the year. Each poem is about how a little boy enjoys his chicken soup with rice during that month. Each month is different, but he is always thinking about chicken soup with rice. He eats with a snowman, while ice skating, in
Show More
Spain, with witches, goblins, and ghosts. He is always thinking about chicken soup with rice. As a teaching idea, each student could write a poem about their favorite food and share it with the class.

In my opinion, this is a great book. Between the writing and the language, this book is not only fun to follow along, but also is informative towards the young reader and what you may experience during each month. Maurice Sendak writes with a flow that becomes contagious as the book progresses. By
Show More
the third page you will most likely be yelling out the rhymes that end each page, "chicken soup with rice"! Furthermore, each page begins with a new month of the year, which happens to be the theme of that page. For example, in December, Sendak finishes the page with "Merry once merry twice merry chicken soup with rice". References to holidays within months and what kind of weather you may expect, are all included in this fun book. Chicken Soup With Rice is book that can help build on children's phonemic awareness with its catchy rhymes while teaching them the months of the year.
