A systematic, step by step workbook that walks through basic Western Classical music theory from "this is a music staff" to chord analysis and basic chord progressions. This "Alto clef" edition includes instruction and practice reading in three clefs - treble, alto, and bass. This edition includes

all three volumes of the basic "Essentials of Music Theory" workbooks in one spiral-bound book.

Each unit has clear instructions and practice questions, as well as a review "quiz" and an ear training section (ear training recordings are available separately).

Out of all three volumes, there are a few questions here and there that aren't clear, and a few units which I feel don't go into quite as much detail as I'd like. Nevertheless I generally find this book is one of the best ways for string students to work through and make sure they haven't missed anything on the music theory front. I use this version for both my viola and my violin students.
