Description

"THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES . . . The chilling new suspense novel from the author of Brotherhood in Death. After a party in New York, Lieutenant Eve Dallas rides home with her billionaire husband, Roarke, happy to be done with cocktails and small talk. After another party, not far away, a woman retires to her bedroom with her husband--and walks into a brutal nightmare. Their paths are about to collide... When the young woman--dazed, naked, and bloody--wanders in front of their car, Roarke slams on the brakes just in time, and Eve, still in glittering gown and heels, springs into action. It's been a long night for the tired homicide cop, and it's far from over. Daphne Strazza is rushed to the ER, but it's too late for Dr. Anthony Strazza. A brilliant orthopedic surgeon, he now lies dead amid the wreckage of his obsessively organized town house, his three safes opened and emptied. Daphne would be a valuable witness, but in her terror and shock the only description of the perp she can offer is repeatedly calling him "the devil" . . . While it emerges that Dr. Strazza was cold, controlling, and widely disliked--and that he treated Daphne like a trophy wife--this is one case where the evidence doesn't point to the spouse as the first suspect. So Eve and her team must get started on the legwork, interviewing everyone from dinner-party guests to professional colleagues to caterers, in a desperate race to answer some crucial questions: What does the devil look like? And where will he show up next?"--… (more)

Coming home with Roarke after an evening being his wife complete with the fancy dress and killer shoes, Eve Dallas finds herself in a new murder investigation when a naked, disoriented woman stumbles out in front of their car. They rush her to the hospital and then Eve and Roarke go back to see
Show More
where she came from. There they discover her dead husband.

Daphne Strazza is convinced that she and her husband were attacked by the devil. Her husband was assaulted and she was assaulted and raped. Eve gets vibes that all wasn't right in the Strazza marriage as she interviews Daphne and has flashbacks to her own childhood when she was assaulted and raped by her own father. She has to put her memories aside to find out who assaulted the Strazza's and killed Dr. Anthony Strazza.

Her investigation leads to two other cases that were eerily similar. Eve and her team including Peabody and McNab are in a rush to find the criminal before he strikes again since he seems to be escalating the violence each time he attacks.

This was an excellent police procedural as we follow the many threads of the investigation. It was also a wonderful romance as we see the relationship Eve and Roarke have built for themselves. I enjoy the mysteries in these stories but I think I like seeing Eve and Roarke's relationship best of all. I can't wait for their next adventure.

Upon returning from a brief getaway, Eve and Rourke literally run into her next case when a naked woman staggers into the street in front of their car. She and her husband were assaulted in their home, and the husband is dead.

This was another excellent mystery in the series, but was also another
Show More
that recalled Eve's childhood trauma. She wrestled with those "echoes" throughout the case and it demonstrated how much her character has developed through the series. Her partnership with Peabody is stronger than ever, and I love how the primary female characters support and work for each other.

Overall, fans of the series won't be disappointed with this entry.

Good entry in the In Death series. Shorter than a lot of them. Good suspense. I'm getting a little tired of the the repetition of discussion of Eve's childhood trauma. It is realistic that it continues to haunt her but it is repetipis fpr the reader unless there is some new history attached to it
Show More
or something fresh. But this was a fast engrossing read overall.

When a bloodied, naked young woman staggers into the path of their car, Eve and Roarke rush her to the hospital. In her shock and confusion, Daphne Strazza is only able to identify her attacker as the devil. And when Eve checks on Daphne’s husband, a renowned surgeon, she finds him dead in the
Show More
bedroom of the Strazza home.
Eve gathers her team; they discover two similar assault cases and Eve soon finds herself enmeshed in an investigation that echoes back to her own childhood.

The gang’s mostly all here [no Mavis or Nadine or Commander Whitney in this outing] for the forty-forth installment of this enduring series. The crimes are nightmarish and horrific; the perpetrator is truly despicable. The telling of the tale is gritty and intense, guaranteed to unsettle readers as it draws them into Eve’s latest case. With believable, realistically-drawn characters, the continually escalating suspense, and a couple of plot twists, readers will be hard-pressed to set this book aside before reaching the final page.

Highly recommended.

Solid, enjoyable Eve Dallas novel. When the "devil" breaks in, brutally rapes Daphne Strazza and kills her husband, Anthony Strazza, Eve and her team get to work unraveling the lives of the devil's victims because of course there are others who fit the same pattern and who have been brutalized.

Enjoyed this one very much even though I figured out "who done it" right from the start.

It is hard to believe that JD Robb has written 44 books in the Eve Duncan/Roarke series.

In any series that run this long, there are bound to be books that are just ok or just miss the mark. This sis one of those books.

While several reviewers will say that the problem with the books is that
Show More
several characters are missing or have small parts. My complaint is that the books seem to focus a great deal on physical abuse of woman. While the characters are police officers investigating murders and it is highly likely that women will be a target but there seem to be a very high proportion of physical abuse in these stories. Given the fact that Eve was sexually abused as a child, this subject seems to take up a great deal of the plot for each book.

This installment was just ok and I would pass on it unless you are someone who needs to read every book in the series. I highly recommend the Audible versions read by Susan Erickson. She does a great job bringing all of the characters to life.

J. D. Robb always manages to give her readers something special, and Echoes in Death is no exception. When Eve and Roarke come across a naked woman roaming the streets, it leads them to a murdered surgeon, beginning an investigation into a series of rapes and assaults of wealthy married couples.
Eve must dig deeply into the lives of these wealthy people to understand the pathology of this killer. Aspects of the case take her back to her abusive childhood making the investigation that much tougher on her.
The killer isn't really difficult to figure out in this one, but the real twist comes at the end of the story once the killer has been identified and caught. As always, Robb's writing makes her stories entertaining to read, but her real talent lies in her ability to find the right emotional nuances in her characters that continue to make them interesting. I'll be looking forward to #45.

Yet another great installment of the In Death Series. Someone is raping beautiful wives while their husbands watch. The crimes escalate and a husband is eventually killed, making these events Eve’s business. Not to mention the fact that she personally almost ran over one of the traumatized wives.
This one strikes close to home for Eve, and I enjoy seeing the connection she has with her husband Roarke. Eve does the job as always, and sticks to her ethics by not allowing the full story to come out. I missed Mavis in this one, although I enjoyed the focus on their marriage. I look forward to the next installment!

While I suspected the guilty party a third of the way through, I nevertheless think this is the best Dallas book yet.

"This guy went to clown school. Why is there a school for clowns? Why are there clowns?"

"Someone has to make 'em laugh."

She slid her gaze to his face. "Seriously?"

He shrugged. "While some fear the clown, many more are vastly entertained."

"This guy supplements his income in food services by dressing
Show More
up in weird getups for parties and benefits. Or his income in food services supplements his clown gigs. Hard to tell. But there you have makeup and costumes and a propensity to scare the shit out of people."

"Some people."

Sincerely shocked, she gaped at him. "You like clowns?"

"'Like' is a strong word in this context." He helped himself to her coffee. "I assume the clown goes on the suspect list."

"You bet your ass."

I read the first book in this series years ago when I was part of a book club. More recently, someone has left a bunch of them (a few at a time) in the book exchange area at a local establishment--so unfortunately, I'm not reading them in order.

Echoes because the attacks and homicide in this book
Show More
remind Dallas of her childhood situation and gives her empathy toward one of the victims. Not that she's still not the tough cop we are used to seeing in this series. Peabody also gets to be somewhat tough instead of playing "good cop" to Dallas's "bad cop".

Note: FYI The attacks and homicides have sexual overtones.

This one starts with the case finding Eve instead of being dispatched to the scene. She and Roarke rescue a woman wandering on the road covered in blood and find out her husband has been murdered. The minor twist to this one is no one liked the murder victim but there is no obvious suspect. Turns
Show More
out this is an escalation from someone who has broken into a few homes with robbery and rape on their mind along with terrorizing the victims. A nice solid story and an enjoyable read.

Echoes in Death is yet another re-read from a series I very much enjoy. Sometimes the mystery isn't as important to me as where Eve and Roarke are going, but this offering is one where the mystery itself was extremely engaging. Watching Eve track the the killer was very satisfying, as was the twist
Show More
that anchored the emotional heart of the book. Vintage J.D. Robb- a great entry into a great series!

ECHOES IN DEATH BY J.D. ROBB finds Eve Dallas standing for the dead once again. This time, Eve and Roarke are coming home from a "do" and they come up on Daphne Strazza, beaten, raped and naked on a cold New York night. She takes Daphne to the ER and then she and Roarke make a visit to the woman's
Show More
home and finds her murdered husband. From this point, Eve finds that that bodies are piling up and she and her team must stop the murderer/rapist before he can kill and rape again.

You'd think after 44 books in a series the author would be getting kind of stale ,but NOT MS ROBB. The murder just keeps on coming and fans like me keep on enjoying the mystery and the characters that make the "in death" series page turners and must reads!

Echoes in Death
3.5 Stars

Eve and her team investigate a series of vicious home invasions targeting married couples after the husband in the most recent attack is killed.

A dark and distressing storyline with an excellent climax and resolution. There is no doubt that Eve is in her element in the
Show More
interrogation room. That said, the pacing does lag somewhat in the middle with the sections dedicated to the renovations at casa Roarke - what is it with Nora and her remodeling fetish?

Anyhoo, back to the case . . .

The investigation is one of the most disturbing in the series as the crimes are particularly heinous and the villain a monster in every sense of the word. While there aren't that many clues to his identity, it is possible to figure it out given the dearth of suspects. Personally, his strange reaction upon meeting Eve made me suspicious from the outset.

The ongoing character development is another highlight as the details of the surviving victim's life emerge and echo with Eve's traumatic past. Eve once again reveals her strength and resilience in confronting her demons and balancing her professionalism and her humanity.

All in all, another solid addition to the series.

One more steller book for this series. I really like how the character of Dallas has grown over the course of the series.

I love this series and this one did not disappoint me. Eve and Roarke work so well together. I loved learning more about Eve from when she was growing up. I love Peabody, McNab, Mavis and all the other great characters that this author has created for this series. I loved the action in the story
Show More
and how Eve solves the crime with a lot of help. I could not put the book down.

Echoes in Death by J D Robb
In Death series #44. Futuristic police procedural. Best read as part of the series.
As NY Lt. Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband, Roarke, are driving home one night, a young woman stumbles out in front of of their car. She’s dazed, naked, and bloody and Eve begins
Show More
the police investigation. The victim’s husband is dead and there are clear signs beatings, rape and burglary. When a second couple is found in the same condition, Eve and her team must tie all the pieces together to find the perpetrator before he strikes again.

Fast moving and intense, Eve and her team plus Roarke as specialist, search buildings, financial statements and electronics to find a killer.
These last few books have been especially grim and bloody. It’s all described in third person, past tense, so the reader is not actually active in the scene, but Eve visualizes how the evidence shows what happened, and it can be ugly.
Secondary characters are recurring and add depth to the story continuity as well as a bit of levity with clothing or vocabulary choices.

I’m instantly drawn into this world over and over again. It never disappoints.
