Never before has the relationship between sisters been more accurately portrayed. In True Colors, Kristin Hannah takes on the complexities that are involved in not only family, but in the sister dynamics. From page one, I could instantly relate to Winona, the oldest sister; the one who's job it
Show More
is to protect her younger siblings, protect the family name, and keep an eye out for any potential issues that may arise. My heart broke for her when she chose to hide her love for Luke in order to allow her youngest sister a shot at true love. Who knew everything would blow up in her face. Aurora is the one sister that I didn't connect to. It must be the fact that my family didn't have a middle child... there were no sides to choose when the cards were played. It was a position that is not to be envied. Choosing one sister over the other when you know that both are doing what they think is 100% right. Vivi Ann is the sister that was most envious of and it seems so strange to say that because she dealt with the most heartache, the most upset and had the hardest life. However, she had true love; love that will conquer all. Who doesn't want that? Choosing love of a man over the love of your family shows just how amazing the relationship Vivi had with the love of her life was. It made me swoon. Overall, the story seemed to have many ups and downs and I found that as I was feeling the book was slow and wasn't overly enjoying it, a surprise would come out of nowhere and I would be hooked once again. Kristin Hannah is an author who sets out to keep her readers interested from the very first page to the very last word.

Overall, I thought this was a good read. It started out a bit slow, but when Dallas Raintree came to town, the story picked up quite a bit and I could not put it down. My only complaint is that I wanted Aurora’s character to be developed more. I thought the author did a good job with Winona and
Show More
Viva Ann, but I didn’t feel as connected with Aurora as I did the other two.

The book begins in 1979 shortly after their mother's passing. It spans almost three decades and we see how her death still impacted them as adult women. Family loyalty and jealousy are two important themes in this book. Jealousy will cause Winona to do the unthinkable, while Vivi Ann is torn between following her heart and obeying her father’s demands.

Without giving too much away, the reader quickly comes to understand that within the Grey family, buried secrets will always find a way to resurface. Silence is not always the answer, as the past has a way of repeating itself. Living one’s life to always fit in, doesn’t mean one is doing the right thing. Be true to yourself and know that sometimes in life you may just have to stand alone.

I have loved all of Kristin Hannah's books. This one is about the bond between three sisters after their mothers death. The characters are great and the book is a great read.

I was a little disappointed in this book...especially the beginning. You could tell what was going to happen a mile away. After about half way through it did add a couple twists with some things you couldn't see coming, but the ending was kinda predictable. I liked Firefly Lane much better.

"True Colors" is Kristen Hannah's 27th novel, but it sure doesn't feel that way--it's still so fresh! The novel tells the story of the Grey sisters, successful but unlucky in love Winonna, perfect Aurora, and beautiful Vivi Ann. When Vivi Ann falls hard for a ranch hand, Dallas, on her family's
Show More
ranch her life is forever changed. A few years into their marriage, Dallas is accused of murder. After a trial where he is defended by an incompetent lawyer, Dallas is convicted and sentenced to life in prison, leaving Vivi Ann on the outside with their young son, Noah. Will Vivi Ann be able to free Dallas, who she believes is innocent, without tearing her family apart?

Like Hannah's other novels, "True Colors" is rich with emotion and drama. The three sisters are torn apart and come back together multiple times over the course of this nearly 400 page novel. You find yourself identifying with different sisters at different points in the novel, and each has her strengths and her flaws. The real star of the novel is the relationship between these ordinary women whose lives and torn apart by an extraordinary event and the resulting tragedy. This novel has a happier ending than some of Hannah's other stories, but it is no less emotional.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about strong women and the bonds between them. This is a great, fast read.

Hannah's novel spans three decades and is the story of three sisters from the time their mother dies in the 1970s to the current day. The bonds of sisterhood and family are very strong and should withstand any difficulty, but Winona, Vivi Anne and Aurora are torn apart when Winona and Vivi Anne vie
Show More
for the same man. The three women struggle over the years with their own issues, including men, children, careers and most of all with their cold and distant father. The story is full of emotion with moments of humor. Once started, it's hard to put down. Because it spans such a long period of time, it's hard to get to know the characters in depth and some of the multiple plot lines aren't developed fully and I think that would have strengthened the novel.

This is the first Kristin Hannah book I've read, and while I thought it was a decent read, it wasn't great by any means.

Yes, it's full of emotion and drama, and plot twists and turns that keep you turning the pages to the end. But...I never really felt connected to the characters, and honestly
Show More
didn't care much about what happened to them.

The primary focus of the story is on the relationship of the three sisters, Winona, Vivi Ann, and Aurora, whose mother died when they were teens, and whose father is emotionally unavailable.

Winona was just a whiner - poor me, I'm fat; poor me, no one loves me. Yawn. The constant pity-party got old. Aurora got short shrift - her character wasn't as fully developed as it could have been, and she was really just a supporting player. And Vivi Ann was just annoying - I really wanted to slap some sense into her.

Repetitive in places (how many descriptions of the mountains or the water do we need?), and spanning a long period of time, I kept reading only to find out what happened, and not out of a desire to become a part of these characters' lives.

Worth checking out of the library (like I did), but I wouldn't buy this one at the bookstore.

I was looking forward to reading this, especially after recently reading Firefly Lane and loving it. I am one of 3 sisters and so was interested in the sister part of the story. I completely identified with Aurora in the story as the peacemaker and the one who is 'always there' to help and 'bridge
Show More
the gap'. The theme of forgiveness was strong throughout the whole novel and the author showed how difficult that can be, but how necessary it is to keep families together. I thought it was realistic that the sisters would go weeks or even months apart and then an event brings them back together. I liked Aurora's quote, 'We're sisters. I just wanted to remind you. No matter what happens, what choices we make, we stick together.'
Other themes presented in the story are alcoholism, depression, rivalry, anger, love, passion, and murder. I enjoyed the suspense of the book and the storyline kept me reading until the very last page. I also liked the storyline involving Vivi Ann's son and I thought it was an accurate account of how teens react to pressures of high school and that 'left out' feeling.
The author's descriptions of the characters made it easy for me to picture each one in my mind and feel like I knew them. Her descriptions of the Washington coast were also beautiful and makes me want to visit the area myself.
I would recommend it for book clubs as it would encourage great discussions about family relationships and forgiveness.

What an incredible story! I think that this book is every bit as good as Firefly Lane!

The three sisters go through so much in this story! Each of them have their own struggles, but the fact that they remain true to each other is amazing. Yes, there are fall-outs that last for a while, but in the
Show More
end, they all come back to each other. They look upon themselves for what a mother and father would give them.

My heart went out to Vivi Ann. When she fell in love with Dallas, she fell hard! But her strength and determination to stand by her man during the hard times was so uplifting. She didn't back down from what she believed in, no matter the cost. Winona, on the other hand, was striving so hard for something that she'd never receive that she damaged many people along the way. She stayed true to herself, but her selfishness caused not only much of her pain, but pain to others too. Aurora was the peacemaker. It didn't become evident that she hid her own problems and feelings until late in the story since she was always so busy worrying about Vivi and Win.

I laughed and cried through this book and have added Kristin Hannah to my favorite author list. Her ability to make me "feel" the story is amazing!

Marvelous, touching, love between 3 sisters and their men. I could not put this book down. I was crying big time by the end of the book, a good cry. A must read.

This enjoyable novel started out strong, but became too unbelieveable and melodramatic toward the end for my taste. Hannah does a good job of fully developing her characters and explaining their motivations, but I just couldn't understand why they all continued to interact with one another as the
Show More
story developed- no family ties are that strong! I felt Aurora was definitely the middle child- she appeared to function more as a foil to her sisters than as a character in her own right. Winona had really no redeeming qualities that I could find, and her actions up until the very end of the novel were all reprehensible; I simply could not find it in me to empatize with her. The book is definitely a good read, but is not Hannah's best effort as it veered toward soap-opera territory at times.

The Grey sisters have always been close. After their mother's death, the girls banded together, becoming best friends. Their stern, disapproving father cares less about his children than about his reputation. To Henry Grey, appearances are everything, and years later, he still demands that his
Show More
daughters reflect his standing in the community.

I loved this book. Didn't want to put it down. I had "happy" tears at a couple of parts. Life does intervene in the sisters lives and hearts are broken and errors forgiven. Vivi Ann is the youngest and nick named "Princess". She can do no wrong in her father's eyes. Aurora is the middle child, and suffers through a boring marriage. Winona is the oldest daughter who has to grow up quickly and take care of the younger girls.

Had a good ending, but very foofoo and hard to get into. Sisterhood drama.

This is the story of three sisters - #1- Winona is the responsible one who has tried to take care of the entire family since their mother died, #2 Aurora is the go-between the one who always tries to settle things, and #3 - Vivi Ann is the spoiled one, she's beautiful (like a Barbie doll) and
Show More
charming and Daddy's favorite.

Luke came back to Oyster Shores and renewed his friendship with Winona who unbeknownst to him and loved him since high school. Luke starts to date Vivi Ann and Winona won't tell Vivi her feelings so she becomes bitter and resentful of the relationship. When Vivi Ann two-times Luke with the ranch hand (Dallas), Winona's jealous reactions force her to blurt the news to Luke and set into motion physical and emotional fights that reverberate through the relationships of family and friends.

As the story evolves and the relationships between the sisters deteriorate, Vivi and her new husband (she married the ranch hand) have to deal without her family support when he is accused and convicted of murder.

The second part of the story surrounds Noah, the son of Vivi and Dallas and the difficulties of growing up with a convicted murderer for a father. Noah's issues and beliefs bring about the changes and help reconstruct the family relationships of the three sisters and bring about the satisfying ending.

I felt the story was a bit predictable and that the characters were very ordinary. The storyline didn't seem to be very surprising and the ending seemed very expected.

I really enjoyed this book. It's emotional and tense in parts but a very satisfying ending! I never had a sister so I like reading about sister relationships. The main love story in this book seemed very real life and I loved it.

I found this book really uneven. There were parts that I enjoyed quite a bit, and parts that really pushed my buttons. If your buttons are in different places than mine, you may like it quite a bit better. The good: I found the characters of Vivi Ann, Winona and particularly Noah quite interesting.
I particularly liked Noah's journal entries, which did a fantastic job of making the character real to me.I think the general writing quality was good, in that I wasn't really aware of it. I like writing that doesn't get in the way of the story. The book really hooked into my emotions. I really pain, joy, and annoyance on the characters' behalf. My biggest problems with the book:First, I really don't like the view that the only worthwhile love is one so full of passion that you forget everything else. This attitude fit in very well with Vivi Ann's character, but when the message spread, and seemed to be a central theme, it really bugged me.Second, I was annoyed by the relationship between the sisters. Again, this may be personal viewpoint speaking, but it seemed to me that everything was always about Vivi Ann. If the others disappointed her, they owed her an apology, but when she let others down, it was just a personal growth thing, not worth a reaction from her. The dad was an annoying and unpleasant character, but he was meant to be that way.Third, I didn't like the way the character of Aurora was handled. To have two of three sisters really drawn out and one remain so flat didn't work well for me. I would have liked the book to be about one or all three. In many ways, my problem with the book was that I didn't know what kind of book it was supposed to be. The blurb avoids talking about the big plot twists, so I've tried to do the same, but I have to wonder if I would have liked it more if I knew what to expect.

I was so close to closing the book and forgetting about it. I am not one to give up on a book but this book was on the larger side and I was almost half way through it and I wasn't at all interested. It was slow, missing pieces. and really didn't draw me in.

Then all of a sudden, it had me. Hooked
Show More
me right in. The story was moving along. I finally started to understand the charactures. I just couldn't put it down. Every chance I could I picked it up even if was to read a paragraph. I was excited and wanted to know "what's next"?

I am an only child and this gave me a feeling of what having a sibling may have been like. It made me feel like this could really happen. It felt real. I

I wish I could have given it more than 4 stars.

Will I read this author again? You bet I will.

After their mother's death, the three Grey sisters, nicknamed Bean, Sprout, and Pea, do the best they can to take care of their father, their ranch, and each other, but encounter many stumbling blocks along the way. The eldest, Winona, is smart, but hindered by weight problems. Aurora, the middle

daughter, is the peacemaker. And Vivi Ann, the youngest, is beautiful, a champion rider, and everyone loves her.

A wonderful story about sisters, family relationships, determining what's most important in your life. Highly recommend.

Three sisters - the pretty one, the smart one and the peacemaker. Are family ties strong enough to hold them together when life gets complicated? The beginning of the novel is disappointing. It was so predictable I almost put it down. But the story picks up steam in the last two thirds with

unexpected twists.... I especially liked the descriptions of troubled teen Noah. Here the author really shined. Not her best but an enjoyable read.

True Colors by Kristin Hannah

When we first meet the three Grey sisters’ it was 1979 and their world had just come crashing down on them. With their Mother‘s death, the positions in the family that each sister holds is formed and solidified,

Winona - the smart one, Vivi Ann the pretty and sunny
Show More
one, and Aurora the peacekeeper and each in her own way is fighting for their father’s approval.

This is a fast paced, tightly written, character driven, sometimes overly melodramatic look at how sisters can be both you salvation and your worst enemy. The story line is centered mainly on Vivi-Anne and how she learns the hard way that you cannot always make lemonade when life hands you lemons, Winona seems to step in as more of a secondary character, and is seen as shrewish and usually acting in her own best interests. I really commend Ms Hannah on Winona’s portrayal in this novel. You can easily come to hate her, but you always see her inner vulnerability and just know that she will do the right and good thing in the end. Aurora seemed a bit superfluous to me, but as you keep reading you will see that she is needed to be the balance between too much good and too much bad.

I really loved this book and I already have Firefly Lane on my “to be read” pile; which has now been moved to the top of the stack. I can see this as one of the best beach reads of the year, and if you do read this…make sure you have a good stock of tissues on hand!

Not one of her better books. It is the story of 3 sisters and the problems that arise when one of them marries "beneath her". There are cheating scandals, murder, imprisonment, divorce and all the necessary problems to keep the reader entranced.

I loved this book. It was the first book I read of Kristin Hannah's, and it got me hooked! She is like "the female Nicholas Sparks"! I love how she writes about the love of a family and what family is all about, and not just the love between a man and a woman.
