I want to recommend this book to some of my family members. Nothing is worse than having a nice dinner with guest that do not share and split the food evenly. As a child in a large family everything was split evenly for all. Then if there were leftovers we got to have seconds. I love how the author
Show More
points this out. It was ingenious to incorporate math in this story. I love books that have multiple skills and lessons for the reader to learn. Great book!!

The King Lion invites the other animal to eat at his kingdom. When it is time for cake the first animal helps hiself to half the cake and the next animal to half of that, and the next animal to half of that and so on. When it reaches the ant he is kind and shares with the king and offers to make
Show More
him dessert in gradtude for the invite. Consequently the other animals offer the same in multiples i order to out do the next.

An interesting counting/concept book about halving and doubling are brought to the reader in the story of an ant going to dine with the king of the jungle. The illustrations are wonderful and really activate the reader to correlate the idea of halving and doubling. Unfortunately, this story
Show More
concentrated only on the math concepts, and forgets to address the use of manners, or a least what would be considered proper etiquette for the situations given. (This should be the case even if the characters in the story act like animals due to being animals.) Children are very literal, and teaching them that you need to one-up each other may not be an intention, but could be an unforeseen consequence.

great for 5-8 yr olds. the DVD was captivating for my 7 yr old who kept hitting replay. I would recommend using both the DVD and the book, as they complement each other nicely.
Inspires wonder about math concepts: doubling and halving. humourous and artful.

Who knew fractions and multiplication could be so much fun? Add fun illustrations and a gentle moral and you've got a great book.

In this book, an ant, the smallest creature, is invited to dine with a lion, the king of the jungle, and other large animals including an elephant and a hippo. When the ant believes he fails the king, he sets off a chain reaction of animals trying to pay their respects to the king via cakes.Great

story in introducing mathematical concepts such as fraction and sharing. Very clever in introducing many lessons for children to learn.

This is a fantastic book about sharing. The littlest ant in the story is the character who has the best concept of sharing. I love that this book incorporates math with fractions and doubling. This book could be used with any grade level depending on the lesson you have in mind to teach with it.

This book tells the story of an ant who was invited to the king lion's house for dinner one evening. The ant is completely shocked at the other animal guest's behavior, including how each animal thought he/she was taking his/her fair share of the cake by taking one half of the remaining cake as it
Show More
was passed around the table. By the time ant received the cake, only a smidgen of the cake was remaining. When ant tried to cut the smidgen of cake in half to share with the lion, it falls to pieces. The ant, feeling horribly for not sharing with the lion, offers to bake the lion a cake the next day. Trying to outdo one another, each of the other animals up each animals by offering to back twice as many cakes for the lion. In the end, lion is thankful for the generosity of the well meaning ant.

This story is about an ant who is invited to dinner with the Lion – the King of the animal kingdom – and his other animal friends. For desert, a cake is passed around and each animal, from largest to smallest, takes half of the remaining cake. The ant is left with crumbs, but offers to bake the
Show More
lion a new cake. All of the other animals, who have to outdo each other, offer to bake twice the number of cakes as the latter. The story uses narrative to introduce the concepts of dividing and doubling.

I think this is a very fun way to teach children about fractions. 3rd grade students are beginning to work on this concept and the ideas of seeing half of what remains and then how that relates to the whole is an incredibly difficult concept for children to grasp on to. This book makes it both
Show More
enjoyable and educational simultaneously.

This story is cute for children, it show them what happens when you cut things in half and it becomes two pieces. Very colorful vibrant graphics. A great addition to a childrens library.

Under the guise of a children's book, children learn mathematical concepts such as halving, doubling, and size relationships. In this book, an ant-- the smallest creature-- is invited to dine with a lion--the king of the jungle-- and other large animals including an elephant and a hippo. When the

This interesting book tells the story of an ant who is invited to dine with the Lion – the King of the animal kingdom – and his other animal guests. After the meal, a cake is passed around and each animal, from largest to smallest, takes half of what is passed to him/her. Once the ant realizes
Show More
she is left with only crumbs, she offers to bake the lion a new cake for the next day. Then all the other animals, who have to outdo each other, offer to bake twice the number of cakes as the previous offer. The story uses a clever narrative to introduce the mathematical concepts of dividing in half, doubling, and size relationships.

The Lion's Share is a great book for aiding in the instruction of fractions. This book discusses a topic that is often difficult for many students. The author has created a story where many animals are invited to a dinner with the lion and they forget their manners and eat a whole cake when they
Show More
all should have only eaten pieces. Each character commits to making another cake, but that many whole cakes would be way too much!! So how many cakes should be baked? How much should each guest receive??

An ant is invited to a special dinner with the King Lion. On his best manners, he is shocked at how greedy and messy the other animals are. The king is grateful for the ant’s genuine generosity.
This is a good theme for children as it is about manners, without directly saying what exactly they
Show More
should do. It could be a good conversation starter.

An ant is invited to a dinner party thrown by the king of the jungle himself, the lion. She was both excited and worried for such an honor. She was a thoughtful ant and she wanted the king to notice her graciousness. What ant hadn't counted on were the other quests and how their behavior effected
Show More
everyone around them, including ant. In order to redeem herself in the king's eyes her kindness shines as the other animals try to outdo each other one by one.

This book would be a great addition to a lesson on fractions or doubling. The illustrations story are fun and engaging beyond the concept, and it would stand alone as a read-aloud.

Great way to illustrate fractions while kids don't even know that is what is happening.

Ant was hosting a very large dinner with many different animals ranging from small ant to large lion. During the dinner, ant was shocked by how horrible the others behaved. When it came time for dessert, Lion passed the cake on to the elephant first, who took half of it. Each subsequent animal took
Show More
half of the remaining piece, leaving nothing but crumbs for ant to share with lion. Ant promises to make it up by baking Lion a special cake. Each of the others want to impress the Lion more than the others and the number of cakes grows exponentially! (Modern fantasy/fiction)

The Lions Share is a modern fantasy that not only teaches a lesson on thoughtfulness and not trying to out-show others, but it also teaches math lessons on fractions and multiplication. Each animal is trying to show off to the King and get his attention, but only one thoughtful creature will be
Show More
able to do so. Because of the math aspect of the book, it is appropriate for intermediate readers.

A deliciously graphic treatment of the mathematical concepts of halving and doubling.

This is a great counting book-actually fraction book! All the animals are invited to eat with lion. Ant is the only one who is on time and the only one who isn't rude when he is eating. When it's time to eat dessert, all of the others animals take huge (each animal taking half or what was left by
Show More
the previous animal). When the cake gets to ant, it is hard for him to break the small piece in half so he offers to bake lion a cake and bring it to him the next day. All of the other animals also insist on baking a cake for lion because they are jealous of ant-each animal baking double the amount of cakes as the previous offer. In the end, ant bakes oneonderful cake for lion and they share. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful and portray animals accurately, and show the amounts of cakes used for counting which is a nice visual for understanding the mathmatical breakdown.

Genre: Fantasy
This book tells the story of a humble ant that goes to a dinner party hosted by the great lion! It is story that not only shows its reader what it means to be generous and humble, but also gives practical examples of what division and multiplication would look like with a cake(s). As
Show More
it is doing all of these things, it is also placed in a fantasy world where animals talk, bake, celebrate, and share.
