A boy kicks a beach ball into the water where two seals find it and start to play. They hit the ball towards the beach accidentally, where a third seal is. One of the seals goes to retrieve the ball and starts to play with the third seal, leaving the second seal in the water lonely and sad. The
Show More
scenario is repeated, only this time the first seal leaves the third seal to return to play with the second seal in the water, and the third seal is sad. In the final scenario the first and second seal come on land and play with the third, and everyone is happy. It took me a couple of reads to understand what is going on in this book, as the distinction between the seals is subtle. I think this book could be really rewarding for kids to figure out.

This story was about a group of seals asking the question What If? The book had very little words which added alot of imagination to the story.

This book had colorful illustrations that would catch the eyes of young children. I would use this book in a preschool classroom in a discussion about friendship.

A book that really asks the reader, what if? It posses several dilemmas and askes the reader to problem solve. With very few words, the use of the pictures, and a little imagination this can become a great book.

This nearly worldless book explores what happens when three seals find a left behind beach ball. With three different scenarios, the seals explore themes in sharing and making friends. A good selection for young readers learning to be friends.

This book has it's own way of showing children that if, then consequences. It gives them the knowledge that their actions or lack there of has specific consequences that can either be good or not so good. Although there were few words, which were the same, the illustrations told the story.
I noticed
Show More
that the inside of the cover tells the "What if" story. Without knowing this information, the illustrations still convey what the "writer" meant to say.
The illustrations appear to be painted, perhaps in acrylic. The colors are solid and appealing to the eye.

"What if" is about two seals who find a ball at the beach and one other seal is watching them and he's very sad about being alone. In the end they all three play together. There are very few words in the book but the pictures tell a lot. A lovely story about making friends!

This book is about two seals who are playing with a beach ball. They then loose the beach ball on the shore and can't get it. The book is interesting because it allows for children to make up assumptions about what is going to happen on the next page. Every page other page says "what if..." and
Show More
that makes children more alert when reading because it makes them curious.

I wasn’t crazy about this book. I think a story about hypothetical situations could be done better. It took a few pages for me to understand the formula the author was using. I suppose I could use this in the classroom and have students fill in the blanks with what they think is happening. I just
Show More
don’t like the lack of words in this story.

This book is about two seal that were playing with a volleyball when it got lost in the water. They make assumptions about what is going to happen to it . I didn't like the book very much and wouldn't reccomend it for students.

This was a great story with few words that highlights the outcomes that occur based on different choices. It walks you through how the choices you make might effect others and how they might feel after. The beautiful watercolor paintings by Mrs. Seeger really brought to life this story with the
Show More
bright colors and the expressions on the seal's faces. Like most of this authors books they always a very important life lesson for young kids.

This would be a great book to help ELD students practice conditional language. They could write the parts of the story that are left up to the reader's imagination, or write their own versions following the pattern of "what if" working through a variety of scenarios and outcomes.

I liked this book. Even though it did not have words, it taught a great lesson. this book can teach children to include everyone. If they see someone sitting by themselves, they can invite them to play instead of leaving them alone.

Although the story line is simple, I think the introduce literacy early as possible. The illustrations also help with the plot of the simple story line, they work well!

What a wonderful book to get the class talking! "What If?" takes the reader on 3 possible journeys all asking what if this happened? The class will gleefully take apart the pictures to figure out what's going on in this fun picture book.

Story of 3 different scenarios. What if? Seal A played with Seal B, what if Seal A played with Seal C what if Seal A played with B & C.
