This is a historical fiction about how the pretzel started. It is historical fiction because it is not actually a true story but it is believable and it happened a long time ago when kings and queens were in charge. I would use this in the primary grades to show the students a plausible story about

how pretzels where made. The bread maker was the main character and he learned through many experiences, and in the end he was a very round and growing character.

This is a great book with cute illustrations. It is about a baker who must prove himself to the dutch and duchess of his land. He works all night and can't come up with anything until finally the pretzel is created. This would be a great book to teach students to work hard and never give up. Even
Show More
though the baker wanted to give up, he worked hard enough and eventually created the perfect snack.

sweet rolls. They loved them so much, they had to have them fresh from the bakery every morning. One day, Walter's cat knocked over the milk. Walter had to use water to make the sweet rolls. When the Duke and Duchess bit into the rolls, they found they were like stones. They sent for Walter and threatened to banish him if he could not come up with a roll that the sun could shine through three times. Walter worked all night long, until finally he was done. When her returned to the Duke and Duchess, they tasted the roll and found it to be very tasty. They did not banish Walter. The roll was called a pretzel.

This book is about a baker who bakes bread for the Duke and Duchess every morning. One morning, a cat tipped over his can of milk and he didn't have enough milk to make the bread rolls. So, he substituted water for milk. The bread rolls were as hard as rocks and the Duke and Duchess were royally

ticked off. They told Walter the only way he can continue to bake for them is if he comes up with a good tasting bread that allows the sun to shine through it three times. In anger, Walter through the last piece of dough he had and it fell to the floor. His sister picked it up and put it in the oven for it had fallen perfectly to allow the sun to shine through it three times. Walter discovered the Pretzel.

Summary: This book is about a baker in a small village. Every moring he bakes the Duke and Duchess sweet rolls until one day his cat spills his milk and he must make the rolls with water instead of milk. The Duke decides to bannish him from the village unless the baker can make a roll that the sun

can shine through three times. After many tries he finally invents the pretzel.

Personal Reaction: I enjoyed this book. The colors and pictures are beautiful. There are many bright colors that I think would catch the eyes of the children you are reading to.

Classroon Extention: 1. After reading this book you can give the children pretzels to taste. 2. Because of how the pictures are done in this book you could let the children use scrap pieces of construction paper to create a picture.

Walter the Baker can show children how to write using dialog. The dialog in this book allow for animated reading using different emphasis on words and emotions, which may make this book a good selection for a read aloud. This book has simple enough text that a beginning reader may also read it

independently.

Great illustrations. Our two-year-old loves this book. Portions are definitely lost on her. She does enjoy that it contains dialogue. I'd say it's more appropriate for older children in the four-year-old or older range. Good to read with pretzels.

A ridiculously stupid story about a Duke who is going to spite himself by exiling his favorite baker for messing up one single time. The ending depends on a really contrived bit of mishearing that put me in mind of Ryan George's YouTube videos about how different things got their names, except Eric

Carle's version here is not at all funny or good.

We've owned this book for two decades, but I don't believe I've ever read it before. I should have kept the streak going.
