I hadn't heard of Jake and Luke Thoene until I recently came across this historical ChristFic novel that was published back in 1998. I had heard of the authors' parents though, Bodie and Brock Thoene, another team of ChristFic authors I plan to try soon. So I decided to read something by the Thoene

sons first.

The stronger side of this war novel is in its action scenes related to battle and certain other perils at sea. The read is weaker when it comes to development in terms of the overall plot, the characters, and the emotion. The unfolding of the story is rushed and cursory in a number of places, as if jerking from one moment to another, and the characters feel thinly crafted and unnatural, sometimes resorting to melodrama.

However, I liked how one character's journey touches on the issue of different people essentially feeling that God owes it to them to be on their side—a question worth examining not only in light of opposing nations at war but concerning human conflict in general.

While this book may be all that I'll read from the Portraits of Destiny series, I'm still looking forward to trying something by the older Thoene team.
