I find the quality of Stout's novels to be consistently higher than his novelettes. I like the middle one of these much better than the other two; after thinking about why, I've decided that it's probably because it contains some sympathetic characters.

Another collection of 3 novellas (Stout seems to like 3 novellas in a book as there are several others in this series so far!).
I especially liked the middle story ("The Cop-Killer") due to the fact that Wolfe (somewhat against his will) works for free. The 3rd story ("The Squirt and the Monkey")

featured Wolfe in a rage against Inspector Cramer, which is always fun. The first story ("Home to Roost") reminded me of one of my favorite Wolfe books (later in the series) - "The Doorbell Rang" - but not nearly as good; perhaps it was Stout's first inspiration for the later full-length novel.
