Like a lot of the children's books that I have, I purchased this because of the illustrations. However, when i critically examine these illustrations there seems to be something lacking. The design is generally rather good but the actual paintings seem to be somewhat overwrought ....too much detail
I did discover a story there about Little Claus and Big Claus that I've never heard before ...and that was interesting. But, overall, as I purchased it for the illustrations, it was ok but not great. I will be donating it to charity. And award it three stars.

or maybe a bit heavy handed with the watercolour. (That's rather harsh coming from one who could not paint anywhere near as well ...but I guess I am comparing against other illustrators. There are some illustrations that nearly make it....for example the wild swans on p105...but even here the dark clouds are maybe a tad too dark.I did discover a story there about Little Claus and Big Claus that I've never heard before ...and that was interesting.
