Description

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends. Every autumn, all through high school, they've worked together at the world's best pumpkin patch. They say good-bye every Halloween, and they're reunited every September 1. But this Halloween is different. Josiah and Deja are finally seniors. It's their last season at the Patch, their last shift together -- their last good-bye. Josie's ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. (He's the melancholy type.) But Deja has a plan: What if, instead of moping and instead of the usual -- slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut -- they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! Maybe Josie could even talk to that cute girl he's been mooning over for three years... What if their last shift was an adventure?… (more)

This YA graphic novel follows two best friends as they work their local pumpkin patch on Halloween night of their senior year of high school. This will be their last night in the patch ever, and they both feel some kind of way about that. I loved this, from the characters to the art to the rep. And
Show More
it makes me want autumn right. now. plox.

This is an absolutely adorable slice of life, is-it-a-romance-or-isn't-it graphic novel about two young adults wandering around a pumpkin patch* on their last night of working there. Deja and Josiah have been working in the same concession stand each Halloween season for three years, and have an
Show More
amazing friendship.

There are so many things to love in this story, and Deja (outgoing, Black, bi, complicated set of ex-relationships scattered throughout the park) and Josiah (introverted, white, not yet had a relationship) are but two of them. I also loved that each of the quite short chapters focused on a different concession stand or attraction at the patch, and that Deja unashamedly enjoys all the food, allowing me to vicariously experience a whole range of things that are outside my access.

* which turned out to be so much more than I was expecting. I have no frame of reference in which to hang this concept.

It's their last night working at the pumpkin patch. Tonight, Deja is going to get her friend Josiah to talk to the cute girl he's been mooning over for the last four seasons, before they all leave for college.

Deja and Josiah have been pumpkin patch besties all through high school. Now, it's their last night working at the patch, and Deja is determined that it's going to be epic. She's going to eat all of her favorite snacks, and she's going to get Josie to finally talk to the girl from the fudge shoppe
Show More
that he's been mooning over since the first day of orientation. Hijinks ensue.

As I fully expected, this book was adorable. The ending was satisfying (if not particularly surprising), and I laughed several times. If you enjoy graphic novels with romance and humor, this one is for you. Plus, it's the perfect read to get in the mood for fall.

Adorable YA graphic novel about true friendship (and loads of food!). A quick and perfect fall read.

This is a clever and beautifully drawn graphic novel about two teens on their last night of work in a pumpkin patch holiday theme venue. It is a night of taking chances and discovering some amazing insights into who they really are before taking the plunge into college. It is a perfect read for the
Show More
time of year and for those who are also embarking on their college adventures. I enjoyed it!

I found this be a fun read and I want to go to that Pumpkin Patch! Deja and Josiah have been working together at Succotash Hut each season and are work friends. This is their last day working as they soon move onto college. They decide to go on an adventure and experience the pumpkin patch as they
Show More
never had before. Josiah has been pining for this another girl but has never had the nerve to speak to her. Deja tells to go for it and as they search for her, they stop at different food huts in the process. It’s a story of friendship, moving on, lost chances, new experiences and just being a teenager.

I thought the artwork was great and the fall colors made me fell so into the season. This was a fun, heartwarming graphic novel. Kudos to both the author and illustrator!

Never say never.....This is a graphic novel that takes place in a Pumpkin Patch, closing night, Halloween. I love that all the graphics are fall colors and it features a bisexual woman. A teen first love story...Cute

Deja and Josiah have worked at the local pumpkin patch every fall for the past three years. On their final night, Deja is pushing Josiah to finally talk to the girl he's had a crush on the whole time, while they also try and enjoy every last second of their time in patch.

Charming with deft

illustrations, I enjoyed this read. The plot beats feel a bit familiar (Rowell has done some short stories with similar vibes) but it doesn't make the narrative any less enjoyable. A fun and quick read if you're looking for a fluffy palate cleanser.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel about two friends, Josie and Deja, who work together every autumn at the Pumpkin Patch. This is the autumn of their senior year of High school. The story is set on the last night of the Pumpkin Patch and the last night they will work together. They decide to
Show More
ditch heir responsibilities and visit all the sites and booths the Pumpkin Patch has to offer. And Deja is hoping to finally get Josie to talk to the girl who works the Fudge Shoppe - who he has had a crush on for years.

A couple of teenagers casually wander around a pumpkin patch trying to help one of them meet up with his crush. Low-key and predictable, the book draws you along with its likable characters and gentle humor.

This graphic novel is super cute! All through high school Josiah and Deja have worked together at the pumpkin patch every September and October. Tonight is their last shift. Deja is determined that Josiah is going to finally speak to the girl he has a crush on. Nothing goes to plan.

This is a story
Show More
about changes, chances and choices. It’s also a love letter to everything Josiah and Deja love about the pumpkin patch -- which includes their relationship. I really liked the characters, and the artwork does such a wonderful job of bringing them, and this place, to life.

I’m always excited when I find a graphic novel or comic in a style that makes me want to keep looking at the pictures, and here there are enough visual details to reward paying close attention.

“Well, we’re not here for any Pie Palace pantry improvement projects. Presently.”
“I love it when you alliterate.”
“We’re here to salvage your romantic future. T minus five minutes, by the way.”
“Why are you putting me up to this? You never cared about my “romantic future” before.”
“I already told you: I’m your friend. And friends don’t let friends live small lives.

This has been a hot read this season. To be honest I am not a fan of Rowell, and have not finished a single book of hers until now. While I did enjoy this book and thought it was a pleasant read, I don’t think it deserved all the hoopla. The story was nice. Two friends work for a pumpkin patch
Show More
running the Squash Hut, but change to the pie station for their last night so that the guy can take a chance to ask out his four season crush. The night delves into an 80’s like movie where the two friends ran from location to location to find this “dream girl”. As I said, it was nice, the art was well done, and I did enjoy it. But it will never be considered a classic.

This is one of the cutest things I’ve ever read. I’m not even a fan of anything pumpkin, yet I want to hang out with besties Deja and Josiah in overalls at their pumpkin patch for always.

Deja and Josiah have worked together at a pumpkin-themed festival throughout high school. Now it’s the last night—next comes college—and “employee of the month” Josiah has never talked to the girl at the fudge shoppe he’s mooned over for four years. Deja isn’t going to let him get
Show More
away without trying, so they go on an odyssey through the festival. It’s adorable and about growth, change, and goats.

I love it when the plot of a story is predictable but the characters and the dialogue are *so good* that you can't even be mad, and in fact you'd be mad if it didn't turn out the way you thought it would. I *loved* this graphic novel about two teens who became friends through their yearly seasonal
Show More
work at a pumpkin patch and who help each other through a last night of work before parting ways for college. I fell in love with both of them in seconds for their sweetness, badassery, and cleverness. This was my first Rowell and now I must read All. The. Things.

The inside covers of Pumpkinsheads features a map of the pumpkin patch where our story takes place, and what fun it is to romp through each element as two (seasonal) coworker/friends try to enjoy their last night together at the patch. I think that the plot of this graphic novel may have been
Show More
"not-for-me" (but can totally see how it would be for other people), as I found it a little too fluffy, and that it took a little bit too long to get to the point. Regardless, I don't think this be seen as a deterrent to anyone looking to pick up this graphic novel. And super, super kudos for the continuous appearance of bi/pansexual characters (and the fact that such an identification doesn't require an entire other graphic novel's worth of analysis and explanation)! The story works very well with the images of each of the characters. In fact, I think one of my favorite parts of the book was the interview at the end talking about the development of the appearance of each of the characters.

This was amazing! Was whipping through it in advance of the autographing session at C2E2, and it went so quickly and nicely. The story was precious, the illustrations were gorgeous, and I was in love with the characters. Just wonderful.
LibraryThing member livingtech
I think it was mostly the setting that didn't resonate with me for this book. I liked the story well enough. It was a light end-of-high-school story, basically about thinking you are in love, and does a good job of capturing the fleetingness of that emotion. Worth reading.

A sweet story about two friends who work in a pumpkin patch. I’m in for anything Rowell does!

“I already told you: I’m your friend. And friends don’t let friends live small lives.”

This was cute, but I’ll be honest I got annoyed with Deja’s antics to keep Josiah away from talking to Marcy, all while saying he needs to talk to her. I picked it up real quick that she had feelings for him, so the whole ordeal just got really annoying.

My mind wasn’t blown and I wasn’t
Show More
super invested in it, it just falls quietly in the “it’s alright” category for me.

This is the best graphic novel that I have ever read. I so want to visit a pumpkin patch now. I am having so many cravings for the different foods mentioned in the novel like a pumpkin bomb and kettle corn. I loved Deja and Josiah. Fall is my favorite time of year and this was a great way to
Show More
experience it. All of the puns are so funny and amazing. Hoping for a Christmas themed graphic novel next.

While I would have liked a bit more depth to the story and the characters, it is a fun read with the goat and Deja’s quest for food and the banter between Deja and Josiah was cute.

The illustrations were what elevated this one to four stars for me, the rich autumn colors, the use of light and
Show More
shadow, the detailed backgrounds that had me slowing down to take everything in from the scene beyond the main focal point, and I loved every single thing about the way Deja is drawn.

Fall is my favorite season and this graphic novel brings all the things I love about Fall, the activities I enjoy doing during this season as well as all the treats you eat that just taste better when leaves have fallen and turned colors into a beautifully drawn and very cute package. Adorable,
Show More
sweet, and nostalgic is this story that makes you remember your high school seasonal jobs and on-the-job friends as well as the fun of being a teen. This is a book that will be in the rotation as a re-read next year during the months of October-November. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get into graphic novels or those that already enjoy them and looking for another story to add to their collection.

A cute, albeit mildly underwhelming, story about high school crushes taking their chances before it's to late. Josiah and Deja have worked at the "world's best" pumpkin patch for the past three falls. They're super tight seasonal friends but that's all about to end. They're both seniors and they
Show More
know that this is their last night working at their favorite place. Deja is nostalgic about the food that she'll miss and she's also convinced that Josiah has to talk to his crush, fudge girl or he'll regret it for the rest of his life. Deja convinces Josiah that they need to make their last night count and they are going to run all over this pumpkin patch seeking out the best food, sights, sounds, and of course, the infamous fudge girl. This book is very atmospheric and it makes you want fall, pumpkins, scarecrows, kettle corn, and corn mazes RIGHT NOW. Also, maybe a pumpkin spice coffee or two as well. Cute, and amazingly well drawn, this little romantic graphic novel is sure to be a hit with teens.
