One of my favorite books. Given the sympathetic viewpoint (it is written as Caesar's autobiography, composed just before his death) it is a very clear picture of Caesar's early life and rise to power, ending just before he enters Gaul for the famous conquest. Since it covers what for

non-specialists is the less well-known part of his life, it may be inherently more interesting. Non-specialists tend to forget he spent nearly 2/3 of his life as a Roman urban politician before the famous conquests.
