Five stars. This book is nearly perfect, including the introduction and afterward. The only thing missing is dealing with the toilet, which is never mentioned, and how five men with penii never once missed having the women that men seem to need so much. I give it five stars nonetheless.

Confederate prisoners escape from Richmond in a stolen balloon and, because of a hurricane, are violently and rapidly transported to an uncharted island in the South Pacific. An engineer, a journalist, a sailor and his young mentor, a dog and a former slave make up the stranded party. Combining the knowledge that exists among them, they create a cozy little civilization, with every one of their needs eventually met. But there is a mysterious presence on this island that keeps the reader guessing about throughout. Just great entertainment, and something to remember when climate change throws the shit into the fan.
