I indeed was shocked, shocked to learn that people going to fancy balls in European capitals were backed by war, famine, pestilence, misery and horror. The officers of each side knew each other and would change sides from one war to the next.

The author is known for his accuracy, according to Wikipedia.

I recommend this short book to help get the idea of what is really like. In my view it is a sort of duty for every citizen to know this.
