Den unge kvinde, Marthe Müller, er rejst til Berlin for at studere kunst. Hun har mødt den ældre journalist Kurt Severing. Et amerikansk jazzorkester Cocoa Kids er på turne. En af orkesteret klarinetspilleren har et forhold til en cabaretsangerinde Pola Mosse, der
Marthe og en af de andre studerende Anna, der ser ud til at være mere til kvinder end til mænd bliver inviteret med til et orgie med sex og kokain i lange baner. Cabareten hedder Gürtellinie, der betyder bæltestedet.
Weimarrepublikken synger på sidste vers. Børskrakket hjælper ikke. Den gamle kansler Müller erstattes af en ny ved navn Brüning udnævnt af præsident Hindenburg.
Gudrun Brauns datter Silvia flakker rundt og bliver for en stund taget under vingerne af en jødisk familie Schwartz. Hun er nysgerrig efter at vide hvad moderens røde sympatier egentlig gik ud på og arbejderen der var sammen med Gudrun, da hun blev skudt, hjælper hende. Kurt Severing er træt af at skrive, fordi det ikke gør nogen forskel. Hans forlægger Carl von Ossietzky bliver retsforfulgt for forræderi. Arbejderen Otto bliver såret af et knivstik af Gudruns mand Otto, der er blevet brunskjorte.
Pola Mosse finder ud af at jazzorkesterets manager Schnitzy snyder dem og hjælper dem til at få deres penge. Hun og klarinetspilleren tager flyveren til Paris. Nationalsocialisterne vinder en jordskredssejr og kommer i Rigsdagen med 107 mandater mod 12 før valget.
Dette bind 2 af den planlagte trilogi slutter med rigsdagsvalget 14 september 1930. Forud er gået mordet på Horst Wessel og stor arbejdsløshed som følge af børskrakket. Vejen er banet for Adolf Hitler.
Tegningerne er detaljerede og bærer præg af grundig research i hvordan Berlin og berlinerne så ud dengang.

The second installment of the epic historical trilogy The second volume of Jason Lutes's historical epic finds the people of Weimar Berlin searching for answers after the lethal May Day demonstration of 1929. Tension builds along with the dividing wall between communists and nationalists, Jews and Gentiles, as the dawn of the Second World War draws closer.
