Re-read this shortly after "Katrina". Fascinating description of pre-satellite weather forecasting on a "hunch". Considering that this book is 40 years old, it is an amazing up-to-date and interesting read. The place of action is a caribbean island, San Fernandez, a thinly veiled Haiti (but at the

time of writing the book, Bagley might have been thinking of Cuba). A hurricane is approaching the island, and at the same time rebels are getting into action to overthrow the local dictator. A handful of locals, Brits and Americans get caught in the action and not only have to protect their lives from bullets but from the monster storm as well. One or two of the characters don't really ring true, but that might also be due to the age of the book. But since it still is being reprinted, there must be something to it! Re-read value: About once a year.

It takes more than a decent talent to write a book where all the major characters stay holed up in a ditch for half the time waiting for a hurricane to pass.

But Bagley not only managed to pull it off, he made sure that you would be on the edge of your seat while reading it.
