Even the good authors have an oops sometimes.

Here Simak explores the nature of destiny, especially how motivation, desires, deceptions, fears, and chance all alter life outcomes and propel us to alternative realities. The action takes place mainly on a surreal planet that was once the home of an advanced civilization. The planet serves as a

way station for departure to points unknown, and indeed during the course of the story the major characters each disappear from their original cohort and move to an subsequent existence elsewhere. On one level this is everyone's fate and Simak uses another planet as a way to spur readers to consider their own fate in this way. Well worth reading and pondering.

Omslaget viser en lidt uhyggeligt udseende dukke uden arme, men med åben mund. I baggrunden ses en by med flotte skinnende kupler
