Remarkably easy to read and understand, this book contains recipes for growing your own beautiful crystals at home, but also a wealth of chemical and physical information described in clear language with simple black-and-white drawings and photographs.

I had this book when I was a teenager and loved it. I could neither acquire nor afford most of the chemicals that I would have wanted, but I did finally get the local pharmacist to order me some alum.

My few successes and many failures using this book were so rewarding, and the explanations of

equilibrium and saturation were so well done and interesting that this is one of a handful of books that led me eventually to become a professional chemist almost thirty years ago.

En artikel om Alan Holden i anledning af hans død i 1985 har en pudsig historie med:
His expertise in crystal growing led to a bit of physical chemistry sleuthing, and solved a mystery in the Western Electric plants producing EDT. Some of the large EDT crystals in one of the plants acquired little wartlike growths, which ate their way into the big crystal and turned white when the crystal was stored on the shelf.
The manager of a second plant came to offer assistance, but could find nothing wrong with the methods being used. When he returned to his own plant, the EDT crystals there developed the same warts. After he visited a third plant, the warts developed there. Holden's help was sought. He dissolved the 'wart' crystals and grew good EDT crystals from the solution.
He proceeded to determine that the wart crystals were a hydrated form of EDT not previously known. Once seeded, it was the stable form at the growing temperatures being used in the plants. In a few days of laboratory work, Holden found the temperature stability ranges of the hydrated and anhydrous forms.
A small change of temperature in the growing tanks then prevented the growth of the unwanted form, whose seeds the unfortunate plant manager had unwittingly carried from plant to plant. This incident inspired Kurt Vonnegut to write the science-fiction novel Cat's Cradle.
