Description

"Join Taako the elf wizard, Merle the dwarf cleric, and Magnus the human warrior for an adventure they are poorly equipped to handle AT BEST, guided ("guided") by their snarky DM, in a graphic novel that, like the smash-hit podcast it's based on, will tickle your funny bone, tug your heartstrings, and probably pants you if you give it half a chance." --

A hilarious riff on D&D with 3 ragtag adventurers looking for fame, glory, and treasure! So. Much. Fun.

I'm trying to catch up on the few Goodreads Choice Awards graphic novels that I haven't read in the final round, which is why I am reading a graphic novel adaptation of a work with which I have no familiarity despite my repeated vows to myself to never do that again.

Apparently this is based on a
Show More
podcast. And maybe hearing the guys talk makes all the difference, because I did not find this tribute to Dungeons & Dragons to be particularly funny, despite all the heavy-handed effort obvious on each page. Ho-hum.

I'll stick with Delicious in Dungeon, thank you.

Required reading for fans of "The Adventure Zone" podcast (and the McElroy joints in general). Good fun, a delicately adapted graphic novel of THB's first adventure. It also serves as a fun standalone adventure for folks who don't follow the podcast, with healthy doses of wry wit (and wetter,
Show More
sloppier wit as well). I enjoy the inclusion of a selection of fan art, too, though illustrator Carey Pietsch has created indelible and appealing version of the boys.

This was a really awesome graphic novel! Perfect for fans of D&D or any similar game. I really loved it and I hope there will be more volumes to come!

I thought this would be dumb and not able to live up to the hype... but it was pretty funny and enjoyable. Not just for RPG fans, The Adventure Zone is zany, off the wall, ingenious, and inventive at every turn. A trio of adventures embark on their quest with the aid of their dungeon master. It's
Show More
fantasy, friendship, foibles, and more. Great fun and I genuinely can't wait to read the next one. Definitely worth the hype!

Do not let the cover fool you. This isn’t really for kids. I think kids would enjoy it, but some parents may be a little perturbed by the language. But other than that this was a riot. I have never heard of the Adventure Zone podcast, but I can guarantee that I will be looking it up. This book is
Show More
like reading a role playing game like Dungeons and Dragons while it is taking place. It has action, it has sass, it has fun characters. I really like the art work and the imagination that went into the story. I will be picking up book 2 soon.

I started reading this before listening to the podcast, so you don't need to listen in order to enjoy. And enjoy I did! I actually decided to start listening about halfway through the comic, because the comic is funny and I knew the podcast would be even funnier. I wasn't wrong. The boys are
Show More
hilarious. This comic is good-natured and a little foul-mouthed and full of adventure. It's great for fantasy fans and it reaaaally makes me want to play D&D! I'll definitely buy as many volumes of these as they come out with. I love the art style too, of course, or I wouldn't have read it haha.

I honestly don’t know if this would be as good if I hadn’t fairly recently listened to the podcasts that this comic is based on. There were some changes, I was sad that they left out the violin guy, but it was pretty good anyway. The art is great.

I’m probably missing something in not having listened to the podcast, but the great news is, for other readers who haven’t listened either, this graphic novel stands on it’s own! There are certainly things that I wish I knew, that I’m sure a quick Google search would tell me, such as who
Show More
plays which character, but that’s honestly not essential information for enjoying the graphic novel(s).

The story starts off with an introduction to the characters, Taako, Merle and Magnus, as they set off on an adventure that quickly turns into a rescue mission. Throughout the first book, they throw their dungeon master (DM) some curveballs and do things that might otherwise be unexpected if D&D followed traditional narrative structure. For those unfamiliar, D&D is a table-top role-playing game. The players have all created characters, which they portray, and they are gently guided on an adventure by the DM. There are many different styles of play – the DM can be running a preset campaign created by D&D or can be running their own campaign that they created.

When I play, my husband is the DM and runs the campaign set in a world that he created himself, a world that has hosted most of our campaigns and adventures in the last few years. I play a sprite druid named Leelou (who is inspired by Betty from Rat Queens) and we have all sorts of crazy adventures as heroes trying to save the world. The McElroys campaign is also self-created and has a fun mix of traditional fantasy and contemporary elements to it. The characters are entertaining and a little derpy and the art style of the book is spot on as well. Overall, it’s a great adventure series and I can’t wait to read the second and anxiously await the third! And maybe in the meantime, I’ll have to start the podcast.

A faithful (almost without violating WotC copyright) rendition of the first balance arc. I like how rendered Griffin vs the players.
