I am going to avoid as many spoilers as possible, but there were lots of tears when I finished reading. This series has a way of wrenching your heart when you are least prepared for it.

Saga continues to be one of the stronger graphic novels that I've been reading, and the ending to this volume... And a year hiatus to the series... ugh

I knew the hiatus was coming after this volume, but I wasn't expecting this ending. Needless to say, there's A THING that happens at the end and if

you're a fan of this series, you're in for a surprise.

End of volume 9 and it still feels like this saga is just beginning! Aaargh! Also, that means it will keep going, right?

Are you effing kidding me?!

What the hell did I just read?!!!

This series continues to be amazing. The story is epic and personal at the same time, The worldbuilding is incredibly creative and the art is evocative. This entry really tied together a bunch of story threads.

So. much. violent death in this one. But also, squirting? What will the next volume even look like? Does this series have a planned arc, and if so, how far are we from the end? I have all of these meta-worries now. And feelings. Lots of feelings. For instance, I was ready for The Will to have a
Show More
redemption arc, but now I would like to see him smashed to smithereens. But so much endless revenge in this. Nearly all the deaths here are because of a death earlier, justifiable or not. When or how could it ever end?

So anxious for the next volume.

Well shit.

More detailed review below.

With the comic going on a hiatus after this collection it leaves the reader with a bit of a shocking ending. The Prince is trying to do what he can to start a new life no matter the cost. The Will is still under someone else’s thumb and Hazel and her parents
Show More
are still on the run. I will not say more but the comic pulls no punches with the storyline at all.

They're taking a break for a bit after this one. They're probably rinsed too.

These continue to be way too violent & bleak for me, but I want to know what happens, so I keep reading them . . .

Crap.
No no, not that this is crap. It is the complete opposite of that. It's another absolutely brilliant volume in this absolutely brilliant series.
But that ending has left me utterly gutted.

Argh, great storytelling, sad ending to this installment. Dingummit.

OH I want so much more of this family. This cliffhanger hurts. It has gone of for so long. I need more. Wonderful book. This series is just amazing.

Damn, that was traumatizing.

Fiona Staples & Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga Volume Nine collects issues 49-54 of Saga illustrated by Staples and written by Vaughan. The story sees Alana, Marko, and Hazel along with Petrichor and Prince Robot IV reunited with Squire, Ghüs, and the reporters Upsher and Doff. Though reunited, their

relative safety is threatened as Ianthe uses the Will to track the family and their companions in order to collect on the bounty on Hazel and her parents. Meanwhile, Prince Robot plans to sell information he received in the previous volume about a false-flag operation in which Landfall and Wreath partnered to destroy the comet world of Phang, despite their seeming perpetual animosity and war that has forced everyone in the universe to choose a side. He hopes Upsher and Doff will publish the story in exchange for giving him and his son, Squire, new identities away from the Robot Kingdom and its conflicts. Unfortunately, both of these two threaten the momentary tranquility of the family. A great continuation of this space opera!

So much death. So much sadness. So well done.

Well, damn.

This is the kind of book that makes me inclined to stop rating books, because my reading experience does not correspond to a Likert scale. On the whole, I was impressed by the storytelling here and the course this volume charts for the rest of the series.

And yet, I continue to be
Show More
disappointed by this series' treatment of LGBTQ characters. Calling out a trope is not the same as deconstructing a trope. The scene in question felt like a refrigerator moment in a way that other deaths in the series did not.

(Litmus test for dignified death scenes: what if your character was replaced by Indiana Jones? Does this feel like an appropriate death for him, one with a certain tragic dignity? Does he feel like the hero of his own story? If not, you may have fridged your character.)
