Description

"Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now known and coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same. The Kauls have been battered by war and tragedy. They are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference that could destroy the Green Bone way of life altogether. As a new generation arises, the clan's growing empire is in danger of coming apart. The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices... but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect"--… (more)

I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.

I will avoid spoilers and keep this simple: this book is everything a reader could hope for in the finale of the dramatic, violent, intricate Green Bone Saga. These books are epics that will remain classics going into future

decades. I'm in awe of what Lee has created. I love the Kauls, I am appalled by the Kauls, I actually cried at the end of this book because of the Kauls. I will likely only get a subscription to Peacock so that I can watch how these books play out interpreted for the screen.

If you haven't read these books yet, DO NOT START HERE. Go to book one, Jade City. Let yourself be swept away. Experience the full sweep of the saga so you'll cry at the end here, as I did.

beautiful job on the whole Green Bone Saga trilogy, and the ending is amazing. really, it should be a tv series, and right away, what with the martial arts crews, the geopolitical insights, and the charismatic members of the family saga at its center.

Very good conclusion to the series. Ties everything together very nicely and in a completely believable way too. Kudos!

A very different book from the first two, much to my surprise. I think the strengths of Jade City and War were their world building, characters and pacing and Jade Legacy fades in comparison, though only a bit. The novelty has worn off, so the world building doesn't feel as fresh. The first two

very much felt like a tight script, easy could be a movie or mini series whereas Jade Legacy feels like an entire TV season. It's a few hundred pages longer and it feels it. I wasn't quite as intrigued since it felt more of a meandering tapestry than a page turner.

That being said, I still very much enjoyed it. I've never read a fantasy series like it before and I was totally hooked on the business and gangster side of the warring clans. I could easily see some big Asian names play the main roles and I'd be 100% interested in watching it. There's a lot of teeth here, and I think Lee does a great job mixing action, dialogue, prose and internal character's thoughts to provide a compelling trilogy.

(note: did not actually finish in April; I assume that was a misclick)
A solid ending to the Greenbone Saga, with my only quibble being just how much time passes in the third installment (which I do understand, as a narrative choice to truly show the legacy of decisions- I feel like the alternate

title is still "the longterm repercussions of Hilo's decisions reverberating across decades").

The worldbuilding continues to shine. I do think reading via audiobook means I missed out on some world maps, but you can guess the comparative context for Espenia, Egutan, and the Uiewan Islands (again, because audiobook my spellings are likely inaccurate). Jade goes global, and with it lines of commerce, alliances, and backroom dealings.

My husband thinks Anden should've ended up as Pillar for No Peak, but I think he's happy doing his own thing. I do wish we'd spent more time lingering with the next generation as we really saw them in snapshot vignettes as time went on, but I guess that's fertile ground if Fonda Lee ever wants to do a short story or novella about say, Ru's high school years or Niko abroad.

This final book in the trilogy covered a lot of territory. It is written as a series of vignettes over an extended period of time telling the reader what happened to the No Peak clan. I believe it was longer than the others, maybe a bit too long, but if I had to pick one of the three books in the

series as a favorite, it would probably still be this one. Probably my favorite thing about the whole series, as well as this book, is the magic system and the kinds of skills that it gives those with the proper training. I thought that the story elements related to Perception and its use were particularly interesting, and Channeling was used very effectively as well. I had trouble finding a favorite character or two through the first two books, but I finally found one among the secondary characters in this book, and came to like some of the older characters more as well. I enjoyed the political and economic machinations as a means of competition among the clans, but I wouldn't have minded trading two or three of those stories for a bit more depth about the characters from the younger generation. This series seems to be a darling of much of the booktuber community, and I did not personally love it as much as many of them seem to, but it was still an enjoyable read and a series worth checking out if you like fantasy. And if you like urban fantasy featuring a mostly sympathetic organized crime family, you will probably love it.
