Very good book for those interested in gardening in northern climates (the author lives and works in Maine). More intended for an audience of growers (commercial), but plenty of tidbits for the backyard gardener or homesteader. Includes a lot of discussion of cold house (unheated greenhouse) and

cool house (minimal heat to keep temps above 32 degF) techniques for growing vegetables, especially greens and cold-hearty vegetables. Great motivation to try many of the techniques myself.

In LibraryThing, I subscribed to SantaThing (a great idea) and one the book I received is about producing vegetable during Winter. Usually when you are gardening in our area, growing vegetable below 10 Celsius degree seemed unrealistic. While reading this book, I discovered plenty of ideas in order

I recently read this book while researching how to start a vegetable garden. I was looking for the other book by the same author, " Four season harvest ..." but the library happened to have this one. Some great ideas there about growing veggies in winter with the help of simple man made structures

. Very easy to setup, even a caveman can do it ;D Also useful techniques for extending the season by getting an early start in spring and extending the fall harvest. There are very useful temperature charts comparing temps inside and outside the hoops. These techniques would be even easier to implement in warmer zones. You will also find a useful list of vegetables that can be grown using these techniques. Cannot wait to try growing carrots under the hoops this fall.

Not what I was looking for (focused on commercial small farm growers) but still picked up some valuable ideas. Very generous sharing specific techniques, with lots of pictures. Pithy.

Although most of his methods for producing vegetables to sell in Maine are not suitable for my small private vegetable beds in Vienna, I learned a lot, and stayed interested in the book. I think I will end up with more fresh vegetables next winter.

Here is the standard, ground-breaking manual for year round vegetable growing for the professional and amateur farmer in New England. The book is clearly written and pragmatic.
