This book is a great book to read to young children who are learning their alphabet. Each letter has its own page and ties into talking about our country. There are many great photographs of things in our history. This book was illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser.

This book is set up ABC style starting off with "A is for America, the land that we love." It is a great first book on American history for younger children. There is so much information in this book. Cheney gave attention to all groups of people: women, minorities, leaders, soldiers, patriots,

founders, artists, etc. The illustrations are charming and will draw you in. There is so much to learn and look at on each page both visually and information-wise. I believe this book is good for all ages. It is a definite must have for my personal home library and for a classroom library.

America is Lynne Cheney’s list of people and ideals associated with our country. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by an ideal or a person that in some way had an impact on America as we know it today. Many of the concepts discussed in the book include equality, patriotism, suffrage,

tolerance, and valor. Other letters in the alphabet are represented by the heroic people that have been influential in the success of America including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as others. The book also discusses the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

Cheney’s book provides a great way for young readers to be exposed to the ideas and people that make America great. Many of the ideas in this book can be confusing for young readers to comprehend, but Cheney writes about them in a way that they can understand them clearly.

After reading America, students will create their own America ABC list. Students will create a list of American qualities and people. Students will learn a lot about America by creating their own ABC lists.
