Picking up after the events in the Over the Garden Wall TV series, Greg dreams himself back into the Unknown. Following his frog, they come across many strange people and beings, and are tasked with helping in odd requests. Along the way, they finally meet up with Wirt, who is unsure how he got

there. Then the gears shift, and we turn to the story of Anna, who is apparently the daughter of the Woodsman from the TV series, although that is not specified anywhere in the book other than the back cover. Anna is somewhat impatiently awaiting the return of her father when she is visited by the ghost of her mother.

The beginning stories with Greg, his frog, and Wirt are quite delightful. They remind me of the best parts of the show. The illustrations and the writing are so similar to the show that the I could hear the characters' voices in my head as I read along. The whimsical and oddly old-fashioned feel is entirely present, and there's even a song thrown in for good measure, although obviously we can't hear the music.

Anna's story was stranger, and not necessarily in a good way. While I didn't dislike it per se, I wasn't necessarily thrilled with it. I am, however, looking forward to Volume 2 when Greg and Wirt's story should hopefully pick up again where left off.
