Pretty adorable comic. Plot-wise, I can tell this is a serialized webcomic though. The chapters meander from idea to idea with most threads suffering from a lack of getting fully developed or resolved. Things are picked up and subsequently dropped at what seems to be whatever the author is

currently interested in writing about, making the narrative cohesion less tight than a volume that was conceived of and written as one unit. Still a fun comic with enjoyable characters, I just wish the plotting was a bit tighter.

Unfamiliar is a graphic novel about Planchette, a witch who has just moved into town but discovers her house is haunted! She enlists the help of some of the other witches in town, all of whom have unique magical abilities, and they work together to help solve each others' problems.

I really enjoyed

the art style - I feel like it's not the kind of thing you'd see a whole graphic novel of, and I think the cuteness paired with the witchiness is just all kinds of adorable. The plot is somewhat formulaic, but I don't think anyone interested in reading this will mind all that much. This is the first volume in what will likely be a multi-volume series, and while the story definitely sets the reader up for what's next to come, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger: be warned if you need all the answers right away!

Thank you to Andrews McMeel and Edelweiss for providing a copy for review.

Cutely drawn witch characters noodle around until the book abruptly stops without accomplishing anything except introducing everybody. It's all situation and no story.

Planchette can only do food magic well and needs help getting the ghosts out of her new home. Pinyon isn't very good at any magic.

Sun is gruff with everyone because she has a curse that puts her only eye in her hair bun and she is working a bunch of menial part-time jobs. Babs is a siren who doesn't want everyone to be attracted to her all the time.

The title is Unfamiliar, but the plot is all too familiar as one by one these misfits all meet each other and start forming friendships and helping each other with their problems in their noodling fashion.

Not bad, but not satisfying on its own. It might be best to wait to read this until the next volume comes out in October.
