Description

He had already made up his mind about her...then she changed it. Thrice wedded, but never bedded, Mathilde Martindale has long lived in the shadow of her indomitable mother, and meekly done as she was told. Until one day she decides to become the mistress of her "own" destiny and leave the royal court to find her path. Married by proxy, Lord Martindale has never even met his bride of three years. Wed as part of a peace treaty, he bitterly resents the mercenary wife who cares only for wealth and prestige. And then he meets her.

Mathilde has never met her husband so, tired of her mother's domination, decides to run off and find him. The marriage was arranged as part of a prisoner release in a civil war, so Guy isn't all that thrilled to have a wife from the southern court. He also doesn't believe her, thinking it's all

some plot from his real wife.
Guy and Mathilde are all right as characters; she's a bit feather-brained and he's just a little too determined to mistrust her, so the plot is a little weak. But I liked the world-building a lot. Ms. Coldbreath does a nice job in creating this fantasy medieval world, and I want to know more about it. This is the first book of hers that I've read (the previous series was recommended to me, but somehow I grabbed this one first), but I want to see what else happens in this world.

The heroine was very naive, but it (mostly) didn't bother me like that often does. It's a grumpy/sunshine trope so it just seemed to go with her young and earnest, sunshiny character. Plus she had genuinely been overly cosseted, so it made sense for her. I liked the first half more than the second,

and the last third or so was the weakest in my opinion. There's a bit of magic and some silliness as well, but overall it was decent. I didn't like how their first fight unfolded, it didn't feel consistent with either of their characters, and was maybe a bit suddenly over the top. I'll continue with the series though.
