Description

On the planet Aqua, a world once known as Mars, Akari Mizunashi has just made her home in the town of Neo-Venezia, a futuristic imitation of the ancient city of Venice. The technology of "Man Home" (formerly Earth) has not entirely reached this planet, and Akari is alone, having no contact with family or friends. Nonetheless, the town, with its charming labyrinths of rivers and canals, becomes Akari's new infatuation, along with the dream of becoming a full-fledged gondolier. Reverting to a more "primitive" lifestyle and pursuing a new trade, Akari becomes both adventurous and independent all at once.

Another gentle and pleasing set of little stories. It's not what I'd always want to read, but I really enjoy the undemandingness and safety of these as a refreshing change from other fare. Gosh, faint praise there... actually I think they're decent stories regardless. Amano finds all kinds of

little details to bring into the spotlight, weaving together things based on actual Italian culture and history, and her own distinctly sci-fi touches with a very science-light tang. A race of gnome-humans living inside Mars to regulate its gravity? Sure! Parliament of space-cats? Absolutely. But it's all told so cheerfully and harmlessly that I really don't feel the urge to quibble about issues of plausibility. Not to everyone's taste, I'm sure, but I enjoyed it a lot.
