This surreal story about what happens when Peter Alan visits the ocean and, on a whim, invites the fish for a visit. The text is simple, and the illustrations are thick-lined, richly colored, and full of visual puns. The whole is odd, but lovely for the right reader (i.e. me).

This book is a great example of a fantasy because the fish read a letter that invites them to a little boys house and they go to visit him. The fish are given human characteristics but at the same time there are a lot of fish puns in the book as well.
Setting: The setting in this book is so
Show More
important because if it were to take place anywhere else, instead of a normal town, then it wouldn't be a fantasy book. The fish visit the town and all the adventures that take place with the fish in town wouldn't have occured.
Art Media: Hand engraving clay coated board and then Adobe Illustrator for adjustments and color.

On a family outing to the beach, Peter Alan wrote a note to the fish to come to his house for a visit. They do!!! This causes some problems. So Peter has to write them another note to get them to go back home. On the next visit to the beach, he spots a note inside of a shell to the humans..inviting
Show More
them to come visit the bottom of the ocean. Here we go again.

Love these illustrations. There are 10 fish puns in the illustrations that are fun to look for.

I adore this book.

I know, that's a strong statement to start a review with, but it is true. Gall has done a wonderful job of creating a book that is not only visually stimulating, but has an amusing story.

This is a fantastic book for children who are still reading with their parents. Children can
Show More
enjoy this book, without knowing how to read. There are more pictures than text, and these do a beautiful job of conveying what is happening in the story. The colors and illustrations are bright, crisp and engaging. This is a wonderful book I feel every collector of "picture" books should own.

In Dear Fish a town is thrown into chaos when Peter Alan get curious about the sea life at a trip to the beach. He writes the fish a note suggesting they visit him at his house; the seas takes Peter up on his offer. The illustrations are excellent, and this book would be appropriate for a wide

range of kids since there is enough going on in the pictures that even non readers would have enough to focus on.
The author and illustrator Chris Gall has included a note at the beginning of the book challenging readers to find the 10 visual puns located within the illustrations. I freely admit that it took me a couple of reads to find all of them, but I felt that this was a great interaction within the book. Dear Fish was a great read, and inspired me to use it for another school/library project.

I thought that this was a great book because it had great humor and pictures fit really well with the words in this book. This book also taught me that there is many things that can happen when you write and this is very important to children because this makes children want to write and this is

why i will read this book to my students.

Awesome book about the creatures of the sea and the fantastical side of having them enter the human world. Illustrations are awesome.

Fish take over an average town. Fish takes over a ballpark. Distinct and clear pictures, all done on a scratchboard. ** Could do a followup art activity with scratchboards to get students involved and excited. Good description words would tie in with a writing assignment. Peter Allen (main

character) finds a message in a bottle from the fish to the humans at the end.
